With what range do you call this maniac?

Haha who's to say he isn't watching porn while gamboooling it up. Your point about him getting stacked or leaving before we get a chance is a fair one. I guess it just comes down to how well one can handle variance and if someone is prepared to take a 50/50 gamble. I have a low tolerance for it, because having come from competitive gaming myself, I despise the fact someone can "win" despite playing worse, it comes with my competitive nature. However I still don't let it affect decisions :p

Indeed you are right. It's just how can you know your AT is up against QJ before you shove :p If I knew I had AT v his QJ I would be shoving all day long. Fair point none the less.

You are right, we NEVER actually know if he has exactly QJ. Which is why we apply ranges and use our best educated guess.

That's the essence of poker. The better players are sharper in their ability to make the correct decision. In this case, our educated guess is that vs a villain shoving a TON of hands, AT is better than most of those hands, so call.

No it doesn't. A decision is either +EV or -EV, end of story.

But this whole discussion is based around the situations where we DO end up again one of these spewtards, so questioning how often this happens is totally irrelevant.

If we run into the top his range so be it. We could just as easily run into the middle or bottom. In cash poker you should purely be thinking "Is this +EV or -EV?", not whether or not you're going to get unlucky and run into this moron's AA or how long it is going to take to recuperate your losses vs him. And so what if it happens again?

Variance raping you shouldn't matter in the slightest if you are properly rollled.

I was going to say exactly this!!! Well put. Another thing, general was hinting at the concept of enumeration, which is a very powerful idea and key to understanding why you must exploit every +ev decision you can find.

Depends on his stack size. A rough estimate for me is:
<20bb 55+, AQ+, AT suited+, KQ suited, <40bb 99+, AK, <60bb JJ+, AK, <100bb QQ+, AK, >100bb AA, KK
I know this is very tight, but I am not stacking off light because I do not like this guy stealing with all in bets. Most of the money in the pot is not mine. Even this tight you are gambling; If you have a small pair against 2 overcards, your edge is only a few percent and may you even be a dog vs. a hand like 9T suited. AK is only a 2:1 favorite vs most unpaired hands. I am also playing tighter up front because somone else might limp in to trap him and end up trapping me as well.

I really am digging this advice in addition to all the others but mainly because of your last point. This has happened to me. I waited for a chance to isolate a maniac with a range that I knew would more than likely be stronger than his but then a Nit entered the pot unexpectedly. Unfortunately I couldn't beat the Nit's range. Me AND the maniac ended up on the rails. Fair to say, With shoves I attempt to play very strong cards and isolate verrrry carefully now as well...

Alditos replies to the general are completely correct, you're a little out of line here General and from my vantage point I can see that you are clearly risk averse to the point of missing +EV opportunities. This is fine and dandy because you can still make money, but it will prevent you from closing in on perfection and moving up in the stakes. The way the General is thinking is a common misconception and the way Aldito is thinking is a perfect example of how to single out specific situations and make the best of them.
