Calling preflop is a pretty significant leak - we should be 3-betting or folding these hands most of the time, especially against an aggressive player who's going to make getting to showdown very difficult if we flop a pair.

Agreed.

It's basically not a situation we want to be limping in preflop with; occasaionally enter with a raise to mix things up, but otherwise these are not worth playing.
It would have looked better if you had read the opening post before commenting.

Having woken up a bit more, I realize I was too rude, and I apologize. I've made mistakes in reading posts myself.

However, you misread the post. I wasn't limping. I was calling from the big blind. Furthermore, as this thread hopefully has proven, I'm not looking for "advice on how to play A8s from the big blind" but a discussion on what makes certain plays viable. One-line comments without reasoning or thinking explained are just shy of worthless.
