Can someone explain what "classified 2.1" means? I get it has to do with his final grade but is it like a 2.1 average??? We don't use the same terminology.

Just means that he got a 2:1...his degree is classified as a 2:1 (60-70%) and that score is based on the average of the marks from all courses and dissertations.

First class honours (1st) - basically impossible to get if you have a decent social life/arent chinese/some super kid
Second class honours, upper division (2.i)
Second class honours, lower division (2.ii)
Third class honours (3rd)
Ordinary degree (Pass)

No AFAIK even a 3rd (40-50%) is a pass with honours. Won't get you very far in the job market though!
