Everything I read about BRM talks about BB / 100 hands played. Is the 100 hands played hands where you voluntarily put money into the pot, hands where you have money in the pot (including sb/bb), or quite simply hands dealt?

Winrates for cash games are usually measured in BB / 100 hands. And its all hands including those, where you folded preflop.

Fundiver is definitely correct that it's all hands you're dealt in.

Also one thing to be aware of in cash winrate discussions is that in limit games, BB / 100 is Big Bets / 100 hands with one Big Bet = 2 big blinds.

In no-limit games, big blinds / 100 hands (bb/100) is standard. But occasionally you do see people using the capital BB/100 to mean big bets per hundred hands in no-limit also. So it can be worth clarifying if you're talking to someone that they mean the normal no-limit bb / 100.
