While playing online poker the other night I was involved in a heads-up situation. I forget where it was at and what I had. Those two things don't matter. Now read carfully.
Here comes the flop. I check. They check. But now the turn. I check. And they first use up their complete amout of time. Now here comes the away sign. The away sign only stays up there for a second. Then goes away. (Just remembered I was at pokerroom.com). Now what is up with that? He couldn't have gotten disconnected. Even with a high speed connection they couldn't have gotten back to the site that fast. They wanted me to see the away sign and make a move on the pot. While they are laying with a big hand. I didnt go for it.
I actually typed in the chat box "nice try" but then I typed "thank you" because actually he taught me a way to make some extra cash. And no, I haven't tried it yet. Can't figure out why. Can't seem to remember to.
Later,
spindoct

What he means is that the guy he was playing pretended not to be there, so that Spindoct made a bet for the pot, knowing that if the other guy wasnt there, his hand would be folded automatically. But when Spindoct bet, this guy would raise the bet, cos he obviously knows he has a stronger hand.

This has never happened to me but in a heads up game you have to be ready for silly things like this.

I got disconnected last night in a heads up game, by the time I had reconnected, I was down to my last 50 chips and all-in. The guy could have waited for me but just stole my blinds as quick as he could before I got back

I would have done the same

Here's another possible explanation. I am not familiar with the poker room in question, but does it give you an option to fold your hand at any time during the hand, or only when faced with a bet call/raise? If folding in turn is not an option on this site, your opponent may not have wanted you to see the cards he was playing and was using the timeout/autofold/sitout function to muck his cards and get out of the hand before it was checked into a showdown. I have actually done that a time or two myself when the hand was checked to the river, I had no shot at the pot (holding 24 suited and the board is AKJ75 rainbow), and didn't want to show.

Really? And what's the difference between taking advantage of another player's disconnection when playing online and just reaching over and stealing chips from someone's stack when his head is turned in a live game? Not trying to be a pollyanna here, but there's advantages and then there's advantages. I'll act in turn in a normal manner, but I'm not going to take advantage of a helpless opponent.

I agree Rammer. But the point is, when its online is a bit like dog eat dog. I know for a fact that if I get DC, some cheating c*nt is gonna take all my chips, so I have no choice to do the same back.

I have never done this but was so angry yesterday when it happened

NICE MOUTH ... colin !!

You should always play poker and post on the computer the way you'd do in public, live - face to face with someone. I agree with Rammer - play fair always and you'll never be sorry. Its not pollyanna'ish - just ethics and shows a person's character.

Well, I guess I could go either way on the "stealing" blinds thing, disconnects are just one of the drawbacks of playing online, if you don't want to risk losing your chips due to a disconnect then don't play online, but that's just my opinion.

Now as for the original post, it would be hard to tell if this guy was trying a "move" on you or not, he could have been away from his computer and came back right as the time ran out and the software sat him out so then he clicked the "I'm back" button. Kinda seems like a dumb move to me but hey to each his own I guess.

I don't agree with no all in protection in tournaments. I can only get dialup out here in the country, and I have lost a lot of chips by being discoed. Protection should be at least enough time to get back in.

I know this is off the main topic but I was playing in a sitngo and was disconected while i was gone there was alot of action so by the time i got back there were only 4 of us left and 1 guy busted out right away, so this time being disonected may have helped me.

Maybe the guy had to go the bathroom really bad, and thought he could make it back before it sat him out...I know it has happened to me; thought I could run and get a drink real fast, or run to the potty, only to make it back just as I miss the last buzzer. I know, I know! I should hit the sit out button, but honestly sometimes I don't think about it! :embarasse But I try to never walk away from a hand in play, and if I'm playing heads up w/ someone, I will say if I have to get up for a second, so the other player knows I may take a second to act. But I always try to get back as quickly as possible.

To add to that, I was playing a SNG once, and since I have dial-up, got disconnected. I did have the best hand, so I was ticked when it happened...wanted to get more money of course! But by the time I got reconnected the hand was over, and some jerk at the table was calling me a cheater, as if I had disconnected on purpose! It happened a long time ago and I still get steamed thinking about! So maybe it's best not to assume...?

pokerroom is actually a pretty decent site, i agree there are some player in cash games that will chase anything with any 2 cards, but what site doesnt have players like those? I've always dominated there 5.00 tourneys.
