I figured he didn't have the ace. Should I have just called, or do you think my reraise was the best decision? Any other comments?

Search forums for Way Ahead / Way Behind (WA/WB), but in a nutshell your raise does two things: 1. Folds out weaker hands 2. Keeps in big hands that crush you.
