I've slacked off on the hand discussions for a few days, but here's one that's contains some interesting problems.

(I couldn't get the hand converter to work properly, so I apologize for the format)

SB is loose and aggressive, and I interpret my table image to be that I'm constantly bluffing.

Stage #222709305: Holdem Normal $0.50/$1 - 2005-11-10 10:21:20 (ET)
Table: FALCON AVE (real money) Seat #7 is the dealer
Seat 7 - Button ($8.75 in chips)
Seat 9 - SB ($9 in chips)
Seat 3 - FPAU ($33.05 in chips)
Seat 4 - UTG ($8.90 in chips)
Seat 5 - MP1 ($14.85 in chips)
Seat 6 - CO ($30.50 in chips)
SB - Posts small blind $0.25
FPAU - Posts big blind $0.50
*** POCKET CARDS ***
Dealt to FPAU 7♦ 9♦
UTG - Folds
MP1 - Folds
CO - Folds
Button - Folds
SB - Calls $0.25
FPAU - Checks
*** FLOP *** 3♣ 10♣ 7♥
SB - Bets $0.50
FPAU - Raises $1 to $1
SB - Calls $0.50
*** TURN *** 3♣ 10♣ 7♥ 5♠
SB - Checks
FPAU - Bets $1
SB - Calls $1
*** RIVER *** 3♣ 10♣ 7♥ 5♠ K♠
SB - Checks

So, the quiz: What do you do on the river, and why? I'm interested in any other comment as well.

I dont think the K helps him as he would not (should not) have called to the river. He may have a small PP (bad players wont let this go) so will call even if you bet. If you bet you may (unlikely but possible) get check raised, but you will get called no matter wat.

I would check the river and hope I have a better hand, but thb I would imagine I am beat here with only middle pair and low kicker

You were correct to bet through to river but might as well cut your losses knowing he will call

What he said. Be glad opponent didn't bet, check, and get on to the next hand.

I would make another bet, maybe $2. The other player doesn't have a strong hand or else he would have bet on the river. If you make a slightly bigger bet, he will think you have the better hand and fold. Even if he calls, you could still beat him depnding on what he has.

Nope, if he has rubbish he'll fold - you would have won anyway by checking. If he has a hand, he'll call or re-raise, which'll cost you $2 or $4 more. If he re-raises, do you call with a pair of 7's and 2 overcards - probably not. What if he was bluffing? - you've just gifted him pot.

Jesus Lederer did a post about this a while back. Banished to the bowels of the site now I suppose.

Check behind. A bet is only getting called by a hand that beats you here (unless the other player is really horrible), and you have little chance of getting a better hand than yours to fold by betting.

My guess is he had a club draw, but there are many other possibilities.

*** RIVER *** [3c] [10c] [7h] [5s] [Ks]
SB - Checks
FPAU - Checks
*** SHOW DOWN ***
SB - Shows [4d] [3d] (One pair, threes)
FPAU - Shows [7d] [9d] (One pair, sevens)
FPAU Collects $4.75 from main pot

There's no value in betting at this point, unless I think he's going to fold a better hand than what I have - and my image is that of a bluffer, so I wouldn't get away with that. There's some chance he'd have called with his pair of threes, though, but we'll never know.

:)

Cheers,
FP

I would guess he had his mind up he was calling you down with any pair! I personally think check calling someone down is quitw possibly thw worst play in poker!

I think you´re talking about this thread.

The situation F Paulsson told is very similar to the first point in my thread. The only difference is that in my thread i talked about betting in the river when you´re first to act, but in this case your opponent checked so it´s similar and you can apply the same strategie.

As colin said, i think you would get called no matter what, because at those stakes you´ll see a lot of calling stations calling you down to the river. So in my opinion if you had bet your opponent would have called with his 3s (i´m almost 96.4% sure of that), but that doesn´t mean that you made the wrong play. His bet-call on the flop and check-call on the turn may be a sign of either weakness (low pair or a draw) or strength (in relation to your 7s), so a check in the river is the best option, because as Paulsson said (and as you can see in my thread) there isn´t any value in betting at that point.
