I knew he had the flush at the end but I had to try and bet at him to see. when he re-raised I should have known. What could I have done better.

Your bet sizing looks a little small to me, players like never fold the nut flush draws which is even more reason to bet more. It gives you more value and allows you to narrow thier hand ranges better on later streets. On the flop I would bet ~.90. That should bring the pot to around $3 on the turn. So then you can bet $2 on the turn. If he calls that bet then think about what hands he is likely to be calling your strong bets with and how he will respond with different types of hands on this river. So after he calls the turn bet you can most likely rule out hands like 2 pairs or sets that would probably have raised by now. He's probably not calling the turn bet with a gutshot unless he's terrible. So that leaves you with some top pair hands, like ak-aj that possibly peeled the flop lite, and flush draws. On the river if you make a blocking bet like you did, the 1 pair hands are almost never raising here.
