Hello friends, this is my first post to cardschat. I am 19 years old and have been playing poker since the day I turned 18. I have been a poker dealer as well as recreational player for the past year.

My friend runs a $.05/$1 home game with a minimum $20 buyin and no max. The game gets pretty huge, especially when it runs into the night. 5x-10x raises are standard, and it is not uncommon to see a 800-1000bb pot, especially on nights with alcohol involved. I feel I am definitely one of the best regulars, since I have fundamental understanding of preflop and postflop strategy. I 100% have some sort of edge, although I don't have a large enough sample size to say exactly how big or small that edge is.

In this game, my friend usually just deals, and rakes at 10% capped at $10. Every hour he does a bonus flip where he matches $3 from every player for a full table flip. This means at a seven to nine handed table (standard) there $21-$27 in rake-back every hour. I have watched how much he takes per hour, and its about $50-$60, minus rakeback.

On top of the bonus flip every hour, he pays a $25 high hand (full house or better) if the table is 9-handed for an hour, and has payouts for Quads, Straight Flush and Royal Flush, all ranging from $100-$300 bonuses.

Now my question: Is this game beatable? At first I thought the rake was too high, but with the big time action and all the bonus money, I'm starting to think it might be a good game.

I would love to hear from all you pros out there, would you frequent this game?

Thanks.

If you ask me the rake isn't high enough.

More is better.

Sounds to me like a great game. I would love to play in. I am in Florida so a little hard unless you are in my neck of the woods

That he hosts regularly and deals and gives back via the flips and high hand, I think it's plenty fair, tbh. Does he provide food too? The home games I play in the rake is way higher but they provide full dinner spreads, beer, drinks, snacks, etc. etc. It's also $1/2 with a $200 and up buy in. So ya..I think your game is definitely beatable especially since you claim to have an edge.

Definitely a beatable game. If your getting 400+ dollar pots with a 10 dollar capped rake with all the bonuses you mentioned sounds fair to me for a home game.

I'm spoiled by casino games with lower rake than that and even some rake free home games although they have mostly dried up. I always stayed away from high rake games as I've heard stories about fairness / safeness issues and wasn't sure at what point the rake would become unbeatable. I recently saw a similar thread on a different forum though and the consensus was with the stack sizes and rake back and bonuses you describe this game is definitely beatable provided you have an edge on the players as you've indicated. Even crazy cruise ship rake which I always refused to play is said to be beatable. Although before I try it I'll be sure to watch a while to make sure the fish are biting LOL
