Hey everyone,

I am watching Event #3 SHR $25k party poker Event from this year. On the final table everyone for the most part is just using a min raise pre flop to enter the pot. With blinds at 80k/160k with a 160k button ante, the average pre flop raise is 325,000 and has been about that sizing in relation to the blinds/antes up untill now Ive been watching.

This is essentially a min raise and doesn't it incentivize a very wide range of hands to play especially for players from the blinds. Is not the point of raising pre flop to also knock out marginal hands and make it not worthwhile for the BB or SB to call and see a flop?

Ive heard this is the new school method but why so? I would think you would want to go 2.5-3x raise with antes in play.

Thanks!

I think there are a few reasons for this:
1. the higher frequency of 3bets and more blind defense
2. the stack depths, players have figured out that they can be put in some very difficult spots and may become "pot stuck"
3. the good players tend to understand ICM more and know that they may be able to min raise fold, but they may have to call with the 3x raise
4. the greater acceptance of Game Theory Optimal play
5. and the smallest amount you can raise and get a fold is the best amount

Use only one size. And increase by up to 2.5x or keep depending on the table. this to take very call (think its reason for such) is influenced by its image as well. If you play badly after the flop, you will take a pre call.

Not a big fan of keeping the same bet sizing. For example you have 5000 chips or 500 big blinds effective stacks and are dealt AA with 5/10 blinds you dont really want to raise to 25. Or you have 20 bbs effective hu and are dealt 22 you dont want to raise to 2.5x because then you are lost post flop and what do you if the villan shoves. You need to adjust sizing both to stack depth, the villan, hand value, and the icm.
