I have played allot of tourneys but played cash for a year and want to switch again.

I want to play $3-$5 on Stars 3 -4 tourneys at a same time with a $500 bankroll.

wow thats huge decision if you mean your only source of income will be poker... In that case GL. Yes sure it is possible to play professionally on micros but you have to play sh1tload of games and ofcourse you have to be good at it :) and I would recommend slightly bigger bankroll for 5$ games. In MTTs is bigger variance, but you know that.

Try looking at scenarios. How much does you avg profit have to be per month? How many hours per month are you willing to play? What does this work out to in avg $ per hour? How realistic is it to think you can do this?

better of course start with 2-3 tournaments and if it goes well gradually add one at a time.

its possible to play professionally in lower sit n go's.
Just have to win consistently and make enough money to support yourself financially.

I would think if you work, SnGs would be better, do you really have time to play MTTs for 5 or 6 hours or more a day? Haven't heard from anyone who has done this I notice. I suspect no one here considers themselves a pro poker player. I say jokingly that I am a professional player, because it is my source of income outside of social security. But what I make would not be called a living.

Bovada is the closest I have found to Stars for US players, but there is still no comparison. My favorite micro tourney on Bovada is the $2.20 1K GTD at 17:25. Check it out.

I guess I'm a bit confused by your terminology. What you are describing that you aspire to do sounds like what I already do. But I do not consider myself a professional poker player. I have a good job and I grind online poker after work and on weekends and I make money at it (not a lot, but I take regular withdrawls).

I do not need the extra income, so I take those winnings and "invest" it in taking shots at bigger live tourneys where I am probably outclassed but still a good player relative to the field and if I make just 1 big score I can re-consider whether or not I need to work 40+ hours a week anymore.

So....I work hard and raise a family and I save for retirement and I play poker for fun because I enjoy it and if I have a really good tournament I might get to retire a whole lot sooner! win win as far as I can tell! :)

I guess, my initial thought would be (as far as advice) give yourself a modest bankroll to start and treat it like your precious, precious baby. The discipline you learn from this will be worth more than the bankroll itself.

I think $250-$500 sounds fine, but with that bankroll if you are multi-tabling then mostly grind $1-3 SnGs after work and occasionally take a shot at $5 SnGs when you're on an upswing and feeling saucy! ;)

I like the $2-3 turbos SnGs because I can fit in 2 sets after work after toddler bedtime, and if I do well, it sounds like something to my husband "I did pretty good tonight, I won $30 in 2 hours" sounds a lot more impressive than "I did pretty good tonight I min-cashed for $10 in a field of 2,000 players after grinding for hours and holding my pee and neglecting laundry and dinner"....ya catch my drift? :)

accumulate poker points, rewards points etc whatever you want to call them and use those to buy in to MTTs

invest in some decent software (if you haven't already) and spent at least 25% of your "poker" time reflecting and studying. This can be as simple as trolling cardschat forums and strategy articles, or posting hand histories or reviewing hands and tournaments, or reading books, watching poker videos etc.

Make it a point to include reflecting on your game when things are going well. I think this is very important to reflect on your play when you are doing something right...most of us just keep on playing our rush and don't stop to analyze and ponder our game until we hit a downswing and we feel we are running low on money and better stop and take a breath...and then we only focus on the recent history of play which wasn't going well which can turn into a negative repeating cycle.

You're pretty close, it's something like that! I already calculated I need an $800,000 score (pre-tax) to go part time at my job. So I'd need A LOT more than that to retire. Like a lot lot lot more :)

but my odds (all of our odds) of doing that are still better than winning the lottery!

I am in a similar situation to MissJacki. I have a full-time career, but I play poker evenings and weekends, looking for the big score which will allow me to give up the day job.

I have found that the best approach (at least for me) is to play satellites on weekday nights for the big online and live weekend tournies. Because the satellites are usually fairly short games, I find that I can do this regularly after a full day`s work without tiredness being a problem.

By taking this approach, I play in games with serious prize pools for modest outlay, so that even a min-cash gives me a good profit, and a final table finish provides a major boost to the savings fund. Earlier this year, I bought myself a new car with cash from my poker profits.

This weekend coming, I will be playing in the GUKPT, a big live tournament with a buyin of £550 ($900) and a prize pool of £100,000 ($165k) guaranteed. It cost me £10.50 ($17) to qualify.

Well I only average about $100 profit per month at online poker...so I would be very happy with $3k too...unless that was my job because I need to make almost 3 times that much to keep my family comfortable like they're used to. So for me that's the distinction between pro and serious amateur.

Hi
I also have a full time job and work even saturday's till 13:00.
My dream is to play the game i love prof. so i wanted to learn to do that.
I stated it wrong i want to play tourney's in my spare time profitable and maybe one day hit a big score.
U right Missjacki i only learn when running bad or am on a loosing streak, which i am.When i run bad i play terrible and bluff allot.

I play sng but i find running bad tourneys and sng are very difficult cause every one has to shove with 20bb with say k2s as a bluff and i call qq and he hits.
As for cash games he would fold were he has 100 or 50bb or i can fold if k on turn and get 100 bb action.U have to hold in tourney and i hate that and play bad the next tourney.
I just want to know tourney player success story to make me feel better about tourney cause i love playing for big money as 1st place pays as for cash in 5nl lolllllllll
thanks for comments and tips

The only thing I can suggest at this point, don't burn yourself out. The tournament grind can be hectic, specially if you're able to play on stars where the fields are huge. You want to enjoy and have fun when playing poker, once it turns into a job you take the fun out of it.

Missjacki as usual is spot on. I would start with some low-level ($5 or lower) SNGs. You can get a feel for tourney play in those. Once you are doing well in them, try some larger field MTTs (at the same buy-in). If you're going to start out at $500, you're goal should be to make that last as long as possible. It's amazing how quickly you can go through it.
