I am not a live player, but I think, boredom must be a huge factor. You drive all the way to the casino, and in 3 hours you see maybe 100 hands. So its natural, that even good players want to get involved as much, as they possibly can, to make better use of their time. I also think it play a role, that regulars can not multi table in live games.

pokerstars recently set a much lower cap of 4 cash tables, and this has made the games significantly looser, because each regular is now found on less tables. Fish typically play way to many hands, and if half the players on a table are fish, you end up with an average VPIP in the 30`s. This would also be the case online, but is counteracted by the ability of regulars to multi table.

When I started to play online some sites had a ONE table maximum.

It was enough to play one table 5-10 LIMIT holdem to earn quite good money. It was half the table to see a flop almost every hand, so a lot like live.

The lowest stakes was 1-2 LH and 25NL on the old Pacific so 100 NL was consider low stakes. A little different today when the russians is nitting it up at nano-stakes.

You are correct about the combination of one table and a much slower pace. It drives some player crazy not to get some fun since they come to play. And if you aren't a pro it is understandable that you can be willing to pay for a little relaxation and excitement.

I want a time machine for Christmas - should have played much higher then I had the chance.
