Hey people!

Im trying to learn which hands to either fold or play dependant on my position on the table in an attempt to advance my game to the next level. I tends to play NL texas cash games.

What cards do you tend to play in each position?

For example, what would be your card range be when UTG or when in possession of the dealer button? what would you fold or play in these and other positions?

Sorry if this doesnt make any sense, i am new to these forums and i was struggling to figure out a way to word this.

Thanks!

Harrington book has a system on this. Its a tight system but very good to starters.

But then again, poker is a situational game- depends on many factors.

Premiums early position, middle position I like to play middle pairs and AJ or better. Late pos suited connectors, and all of the pairs with premiums.

generally the earlier your position the narrower your range should be and vice versa, for example AJo is a standard open from the CO but from EP it's a clear fold under most circumstances.

Hi I am a newbie myself and all I can say is that it depends a lot (there are lots of hands charts ).
That being said I think it's very important you know WHY you only play certain hands in certain positions, something I've only recently come to realize (sadly ).
Now take everything I say with a grain of salt since I haven't played in a while, am a newbie, and pretty much a loosing player. That being said recently I've found out a few things about hole cards which you may find interesting. Here they are (they can, again, be wrong, this is how I see it ) :
1 Big cards (AK,KQ,AQ etc ) you want people to call but not that many, at least at the micros I wouldn't want to have all the board limping in. Those are the kinds of hands that crush few opponents but have trouble with lots of callers
Small suited pairs play in LP BECAUSE you want callers, lots of callers and NO RAISERS behind you. Those sorts of hands (89s for example ) are great if you hit the board BUT you hit it rarely so you needs two things : quite a few limpers before you AND nobody to raise after you. They just can't take raises well, it's -EV
Of course AQs is a much better hand to play so always be careful with flushes when playing smaller suited pairs
Another thing, don't aim for cards like 97s T8s, they're harder to play and you're a newbie
Be VERY careful if you don't have a good kicker (say you have A 7s and hit A 5 9 board ), they can turn ugly and, because of raising and position they can get you in trouble. If you are last to act with A 7 you can see if anybody raised the A on the board and adjust accordingly but if you are first you pretty much have to check or try your luck I guess. So we want to play strong hands from position which can't really be dominated that easily (basically hands which we can call with ). You should really pay attention to pot odds and implied odds with suited connectors (so,again, play them in LP )
Anyway, i hope I haven't misled you, good luck :)

Thanks for the charts Bear. I usually base my decision on how I feel at the time and how much I have had to drink. :)
It is interesting to note that all of these charts have a different perspective so it goes to show that it actually does all depend.
You can look for the advice that they have in common and take that as a pretty good starting point.
