Just came back from Vegas and played $1/2 NL at the Flamingo.
Would you have played this hand differently?
Would you have played this hand at all? In reevaluting the pot odds...it may not have been a wise play...
I get dealt J♣8♣ on the SB, 4 player's limp in so I throw in the extra buck.
BB raises to $15, they all fold to me. Currently there is $25 in the pot.
The BB has been known to raise when a lot of player's have limped in and he is one of the last to speak. So I figured there was a possibility he was just trying to steal the pot. I decided, heads up, I'd see if there was opportunity here to play the "poker mind game"....
So I call. Now there is $38 in the pot.
Flop comes:
7♣9♣3♥
I have a flush draw heads up and a potential additional win at the $200 poker room high hand pot if I get my jack high gut shot straight flush draw.
I decide to lead out betting...when I am in a hand I seldom check when first to act...unless I absolutely didn't hit and the pot's not worth a steal.
So I bet $15 ... and in rethinking this, I think I would have bet $20 (a little over 1/2 the pot)...that seems like a more substantial bet...$15 heads up seems like a feeler bet to me. So now there is $53 in the pot
He reraises me to $35....making the pot $88 and another $20 from me....this was a borderline call for me....I tend at this stage to fold more often than call, and it was probably the potential of winning that high hand pot..although slim...so I call his additional $20 reraise and
now there is $108 in the pot.
Turn comes:
5♥
I check. I'm still on a flush draw and I don't want him to reraise me so I wait for him to bet.
He bets another $35....Now there is $143 in the pot.
I call.
River comes:
J♦
I did not hit my flush, or my gut shot straight or gut shot straight flush, I hit high pair on the board, maybe he had a higher pocket pair all this time...but with a flush draw and straight draw on the board...I would think he would have bet more to scare me off my draws so I didn't put him on pocket QQs KKs or AAs.
I knew if I checked it would be a total sign of weakness and he'd bet out for sure...and maybe more than I would be willing to call and then I'd have to fold and never know if he bet based on my weak actions. But if I bet and he wasn't sure about his hand, he'd finally either fold or just call. If he really had something, then he'd come over the top and then the reasonable thing for me to do would be to fold.
...I wanted him to think...hmmm she called my raise preflop, bet out first, called my reraise on the flop, checked and flat called my 1/3 pot bet on the turn, what does she have?? So I figured I would have to bet out and bet out bigger than his previous bets.
So I bet $50 and this time he didn't raise, and just called.
He flips over pocket 10s and I win a $243 pot with High pair Jack.
He was ticked off to no end and said, "you called my $35 bets with J,8???"
Comments please.
Cheers,
