Why are mixed games played at such high stakes?

I love playing mixed games, but (1) they're hard to find, and (2) when I do see them, they're usually for stakes far above my bankroll. Yesterday at MGM National Harbor, they had a $60-$120 mixed game going. At the Borgata I see $200-$400 and $300-$600 mixed games. True, there is occasionally a $6-$12 or $8-$16 mixed game at MGM NH, but in general, these games require you to sit down with thousands of dollars, not hundreds.

I can't help thinking that mixed games would grow in popularity if they were more friendly to a beginner's bankroll. Any ideas about why we don't see smaller stakes mixed games?

I've wondered this as well and I think it's simply because you have top be very good to be good at mixed game. casinos don't want people to lose a lot in poker because they make all their money by people being on the tables and returning to the tables. If you're bad at a game and lose a lot then you're less likely to want to return and hence only the people who are really good, or who can afford to lose a ton of money, get to sit down and play mixed games.

I may be naive, but casino's do try to protect people from themselves just to keep them coming back for more.

I agee with you. I would play it if they had it at 1-2 or 2-5. Maybe it's a rich man hobby to play mixed game or they know it would not be popular enough to fill tables. Anyway, we do a special amongst poker friends once in a while.

Mixed games are played where there is enough audience. Otherwise, no one will be interested. Necessarily with a guarantee and that there was no overlay. This is complicated. Therefore so little attention is paid to them.

I do not like such mixed games. I prefer to focus my attention on only one direction. This will allow me to improve my skills and gain experience more effectively.

Most rec players don't play mixed games. They play hold 'em. Most rec players don't want to lose a lot of money. Hold 'em is what's "in" and that's what everyone is playing. Combine those two and you get no mixed games. It's mostly the older folks and pros that play things like Stud, H/L, etc. I grew up playing stud and draw. Hold 'em was non existent to me at a young age.

I notice this as well. How does anyone even play that high if they don't start out a bit low?

I think it's because mixed games are harder.
And the recreational player doesn't want to first learn 8 different poker games before he can start playing.
