This was an interesting question when I first started playing. But I think i`ts a little wore out now. And I have no idea who is best, because anyone can win at any given time. I would say Stu Ungar was a prodigy, but who would want that lifestyle.

The best tournament NLHE player is Phil Hellmuth. You can't argue with 11 bracelets, and he played bigger fields to win those. When Doyle won his first bracelet there were 21 other players.

The question was "best poker player" though. I assume that means you have to consider all the various poker games like tournaments, ring games, Omaha, HORSE, Limit, NL, etc. That would exclude Hellmuth.

Doyle says that Chip Reese was the best. But now? Man... that's a tough one.

I'd have to go with Phil Ivey, but my knowledge of non-NLHE tournament games is pretty limited.

ITS OBVIOUSLY GUS HANSEN I SAW HIM BLUFF A GUY SO GOOD ONCE THE GUY DIDNT EVEN NO HE WAS BEIN BLUFFED ITS OBV HANSEN LDO
OH HE HAS A BRACELIT I THINK TOO ORE SOMETHING1???

It's ridiculous saying someone's 'the best'. What are you basing it on?

Total winnings? Profit?
Total final tables?
wsop bracelets?
Best all-round?
Game-specific?
How can you compare cash players to ring players?

No limit tournaments = Daniel Negreanu or Alan Cunningham

Overall, that's so hard now that Chip Reese has passed. I refuse to say it is Freddy Deeb, even though he won the HORSE event last year at the WSOP.

I think is Daniel Negreanu, he can bluff and read almost everyone.

And then, inexplicably, call them anyway... :p

The points have all been made, there's no way you could even settle on the criteria for selecting a "best" player.

If you were to ask me about my favourite player, however, there's only one answer. Doyle.

That's a very good way to put it, and I fully agree. I'd be most afraid of Ivey.

I think of the new crop of pro's it would be Daniel Negreanu strictly for his reading of players, but Doyle Brunson is a class act 100% of the wayto the top.:D

I'd have to say Daniel Negreanu OR Phil Ivey..... i've never seen someone like Negreanu who can play any two cards and still outplay another person time after time...... But can't argue with Ivey who on average makes $3300.00 an hour playing poker... Both my favorite though
