Reading the other thread about luck in free rolls made me start this one. I've been thinking about starting a thread about what really is "luck" in poker for a while.

Ok, this is what most people consider "good luck" in poker:

- Getting premium cards
- Your premium hands not losing
-Winning coin flips
- Winning when you're an underdog, etc.

...now what I consider real luck, especially when you are playing against good players is getting a good hand and your opponents also getting a good hand, in a good situation.

For example: You flopping a set, your opponent flops a flush draw, both you and your opponent hit the magical river card that gives him the nut flush and you the full house.....to me, that's the real luck involved in poker. Everything else is variance, imo.

I totally jinxed myself my posting this thread. About 10 minutes ago when I was playing online, I turned the nut flush, all the money went in (about 140 bb) and villain rivers the full house. All I could think about is that the poker gods must have read this stupid thread, lol.

My definition of luck changes depending on the circumstances. Sometimes I feel lucky in a MTT when I don't get marginal cards early. The kinds of hands that can lose me a lot of chips and sometimes I feel lucky when I have TPTK in the same tourney and it holds up to an aggressive raiser.

I guess anytime the situation is out of my hands and there are more cards to come I feel lucky when it works out in my favour.

But I don't think luck has much to do with success in poker.

In my opinion upsetting "the odds" is where the luck comes in to play. After all poker is a game which heavily involves mathematics and if in a hand you can overcome a huge mathematical disadvantage to win a pot then that has to be considered luck.

I agree that luck is when people get their cards that increase the value of their hand but they still don't win because it set up another person. Happens all the time.

Having the best hand and playing that hand only to have someone come way behind and out draw you. This game no matter how well you play and what ever pot odds used or math to determine your bet seems to come down to luck for someone. Some days your lucky if your hand holds up and other times your luck is to have to come from behind.

What sucks is when what ever you do you have no luck!

I feel lucky when people try to bluff me out when I have a strong hand on the flop... I think all the luck in poker is to find a stupid opponent :)

I feel lucky when my better hand doesn't lose on the turn or the river. Which lately I've been extremely unlucky

Hi,

I am a newbie here and it happens with me too and sometimes I stuck in such situations and I got that luck factor, but what I strongly feel is sometimes it is a matter of luck and sometimes it is not so, just give the best of your efforts, be focus and luck is in your hands.

Thanks

Is There Such a Thing As Luck?

Luck or fortuity is a belief in good or bad fortune in life caused by accident or chance, and attributed by some to reasons of faith or superstition, which happens beyond a person's control.

Another view holds that "luck is probability taken personally." A rationalist approach to luck includes the application of the rules of probability, and an avoidance of unscientific beliefs. The rationalist feels the belief in luck is a result of poor reasoning or wishful thinking. To a rationalist, a believer in luck who asserts that something has influenced his or her luck commits the "post hoc ergo propter hoc" logical fallacy: that because two events are connected sequentially, they are connected causally as well. In general:
A happens (luck-attracting event or action) and then B happens;
Therefore, A influenced B.
In the rationalist perspective, probability is only affected by confirmed causal connections.

The gambler's fallacy and inverse gambler's fallacy both explain some reasoning problems in common beliefs in luck. They involve denying the unpredictability of random events: "I haven't rolled a seven all week, so I'll definitely roll one tonight".

Luck is merely an expression noting an extended period of noted outcomes, completely consistent with random walk probability theory. Wishing one "good luck" will not cause such an extended period, but it expresses positive feelings toward the one—not necessarily wholly undesirable.

Since I've always considered myself to be a rationalist, I have to side with the position, there is no such thing as luck. :D

Luck is when your opponent gets that 1 card that can help them win when they are pretty much dead.

I think a person only really 'got lucky' when he bad beats, for me a bad beat is when you're 6 percent to lose or less at any point of the hand, and you just come back.

Luck is that one time you need that card to proceed in the tournament for the win.

If that means catching aces at the right time or rivering a two outer when you thought your kings were the best hand.

It's really depends on you what luck is.

Have a great day!

I believe you can have good luck in poker, but it is a short term, once in awhile thing. Luck will not determine long term success, poker is mostly about variance and it takes real skill to win in the long run, not luck.
