Good morning guys; Just thought I'd ask about poker academies as I was considering doing a course. I've come across 'poker school' whilst surfing the net it seems to last about 3 months with a set curriculum noted books are, if i remember correctly, Harrington's vol 1,2,3, as well as some others. It seems ok but what do you lot think? Is there any you would recommend other than that, maybe one that is not so long. Finally is there any 'live' academies you would recommend? I play live poker only at the moment so this would benefit me. I'm from Northern England so I don't know if anyone knows any?

Depends on what games you play to what books are best. If you play tournaments you can't go far wrong with the Harrington books. In particular Vol 1 and 2.

There is a ton of information out there, you just have to dig for it. Try reading the golden archive on Cards Chat, it has some good stuff in it,

I don't know of any academys though sorry.

those courses are expensive aren't they ? I guess if you're one of those people like me that have Harrington's 1 & 2 and still don't retain alot from them . then maybe you need someone to go over it with you . we had a discussion group on both , but not sure if it's still going but maybe some good reading .
I would rather see you re-reading your books and spending your money at all our buy in games . we'll learn ya :) good luck .

I'm damn sure poker academies help a lot, especially if it's done by pros. for example, david williams got tutored and taught by Marcel Luske. Jamie Gold got tutored by Johnny Chan. Tobey Maguire(actor of Spider Man) got tutored and helped by Daniel Negreanu. Depends who you get helped from. But honestly, you need lot of money to get tutored and if you're trying to tune your game for low buy-in tournaments or 1/2 cash game, then it's not worth it. I would tone my skills on my own and only look for academy if I move up high stakes such as 25/50 and higher. I play 5/10 live in casino and i haven't had single academy training. i did well in 5/10. im taking break right now after getting bad beat. learn on your own. i play really well live but not online.

Thanks for the advice, lovesme I only play low stakes tournaments at the moment between 20-50 pounds entry sterling, I've done quite well recently having won a couple and made final table finishing 6th in the other one so I think I'm doing ok. The site I looked at (poker school online) seemed to offer a course for 20 dollars a month with an anual fee of around 250 but if you reckon just to stick with what I'm doing then fine this site helps no end with expert advice on tap. Cheers the sniper

cheers mate, are the buy in games on-line or are they live and how do i enter them?

our buy in games are online , unfortunately I know nothing about anything live . but I was thinking both are important to poker players these days .
our buy in games are located on front page under real money tournaments and passwords are in sub -section under it or on top if your already in the real money section . we have games at ub on Mon , bodog on Tue. , carbon on Thur. , fulltilt on Fri. , bodog on sat. and pokerstars and fulltilt on sun . all have between $100 and $200 added to prize pool by the forum and have between 15 - 40 people . if you have some skills (and luck ) they can be very lucrative .
hope to see you at our tables soon :) good luck sniper :)

ps.... check our calendar for dates and times , use our links for best bonuses if you don't have all the sites already :)

It's better to learn on your own through lowstakes because not only you gain experience, but it's cheaper. If you compare amount spent on academy compared to amount spent on tourneys, amount spent on tourneys are much cheaper. And no matter how well you get tutored, it can't purely beat experience. If you learn on your own, you develop natural instincts and learn how to be adept and adjust to every environment and situations. I haven't lost a single penny so far. I started with 20 bucks in 1/1 and grinded it to $14000 where I play 5/10. I can guarantee you that playing low stakes, tourneys will get rid of all the amateur/beginner moves and you will learn more quickly. no need for academy unless you're planning to join wsop main event, high stakes. just my opinion though.

i know vanessa rousso is helding some kind of wpt boot camp where she teaches game theory for 600 bucks. Not worth it for low stakes. There's no game theory involved in low stakes. People play very loose in low stakes and play like donks. In low stakes, learning outs, percentages, pot odds, position and random basics are enough to sharpen your game. You should only seek academy if you plan to take poker to another level, such as high stakes or wsop main event, etc.

The Harrington books are prob the best I've read. I also like Phil Gordons series of books. They are entertaining and have a lot of useful info. Full Tilt has their free academies and they seem to be half decent. Nothing ground breaking so far but if you are like me you get more out of watching something then reading it.

There is a ton of info and good players on here that seem to give all the info you could want for free. I am a new member here but enjoy reading some of the old posts and the stories on how guys started at very low stakes and polished there games and now play at higher stakes and are making money. I will say most of what I see and read on here is directed to online help and live poker if a much different animal.
