So I was unemployed pretty much all last year and spent most of my time playing and studying poker. Then something bad happened. I got a job! Now my game has pretty much gone to hell due to the fact that I never have time to play or study anymore. When I get home from work I'm tired and in no mood to play. Weekends come and I gotta run around and do things I can't do during the week.

I really want to get back into the game. I've put aside a 20 buyin live bankroll with my paychecks. Have plenty of cash online to grind with. Only thing I don't have is the time to play and study. I've loaded some poker notes on my tablet to study while working but I have a hard time sitting down and putting in any hands after the workday is over. I've barely played at all since I started working again. I know it's a bad idea to sit down at the tables when stressed or tired after a long day of work. What should I do to get back into the game?

It seems like you need to decide how high a priority you're going to make poker. If it's high enough, you'll make time by spending less time on or setting aside other things. Whether you're willing to do that is up to you, and it's fine if you're not provided you realize it's your decision.

I would say that if you think you can make a living by just playing poker then you should simply quit your job and play poker for a living. Otherwise its maybe better to cash out your winnings and dont play @ all

, im in the exact same position as you. I started back work full time january and I can't play as much.
I have gone awful Im not even sure I have an edge anymore just a solid positional sense and solid range.

I have been thinking as long as I have my bankroll I would be happier playing poker just living on basic food and supplies grinding full time working on getting to the stage where I have extra disposable income and so forth so forth.

its not as if I would need to anywhere and within a year the bankroll would be growing larger month to month.

it depends on you ofcourse.

i would say if you live and breath poker quit and go full time set small goals and give yourself just enough income to get by.

if you have busy life and enjoy a variety of things full time poker becomes 10 times harder.
pro players are willing to give up lives to focus solely on becoming good enough at poker to make a living

Sounds like if you want to get back into poker and could afford it, get a part time job! If not, I think about the best you could do is focusing on getting chores and errands done during the week, even if you don't feel like it, and then setting aside a day to grind on the weekends.

It's a tough balance, and I'm battling it now as well. Wish I had an answer for you, but just wanted to let you know, you aren't alone :)

Basically, I don't force myself to play when I don't want to. But sometimes when I get the urge, I may stop off and play for a couple hours live on my way home from work once or twice a week.

Once a month or so I find a big buy in tournament at a nearby casino that I play in. Sometimes more, if I have the time, but I try to do at least one.

I take mini 3-4 day extended weekend trips every quarter or so to a bigger series nearby (about a 5 hour drive max).

I take about 2 weeks in the summer and play the wsop and surrounding events.

I still want to do more, but all that helps keep me going for now. :)

Even though i would never presume i was good enough to make a living off poker , i would also never advise anyone to quit their job and focus on poker no matter how good they thought they were. I know when i get home from work my way to relax and unwind is to either play a little poker or play Video games. I seem to be able to always find time to unwind or the stress level would have me jumping off a bridge. I believe you could find at least an hour or 2 a day to unwind in and now you have to decide how you will use that time to unwind. Hope it works out well for you.

life sometimes make it very difficult to find time to play. if you want to play you are simply going to have schedule time to play like a hour a day before going to bed.

I had this for the last few years, new job, crazy hours, new country, new girlfriend etc. There is a chance your life won't always be like this (limited time) and poker is something you will come back to more later on. If this sounds likely to you, I suggest do what you can in the meantime to stay sharp so you don't lose it altogether.

I've actually been in a similiar situation recently and a few times. I ask in the forum and got some great answers. A break from poker would be the best thing for you. I wanted to take a break to get everything sorted out but I decided to take some time off from work, try to sort stuff out and still play some poker on the side. The last Time I took a break I was gone from the poker world for a year. This time things seems to be going well. Your top priority is your Job and studies , you should take a break and focus on those two things first, otherwise you might find yourself losing since you won't be 100%.wish you the best and Good luck

we are mobile !!

Why don't you try playing poker on a tablet/mobile so you'll be playing poker on the move, so you don't need to be home. The games may vary from real money/ play money depending on the phone's operating system.
If you have some genuine friends playing poker then you can try staking them if you think they are any good so in that sense you can be more involved with the game indirectly.
