first out vs. bubble

Where would you rather bust out?

Bubble: maybe you played well, and just got unlucky, so you can be happy there (?), maybe you get points in any series/leader-boards you are in, if a big live event you get experience that will help you next time and "bang for your buck".

First out: you feel like the biggest donkey in the tournament, but you can use the time you "saved" to either play a different game or do something else.

first out-
1) mainly its because of a bad beat, i do not go all in ahead with my opponent having many outs


2) nothing i hate more than playing a tournament for 2.5 hours and then bubbling on a bad decision/mediocre hand/ bad beat

much rather be first out

i'd rather bubble, the experience and knowledge gained makes the 2.5 hours worth the while. knowledge is power.

^^ this is another point I was just going to add. Usually you can learn some kind of lesson, often a very good one if you bubble.

If it be, then so be it! I used to think that duration was some sort of measure of something. I don't think that way so much anymore. If I make it to the bubble, as I did at least once this weekend, and blow it, it is so much more painful than a first out, which I also did this weekend.

I think bubbling is by far the better result - trouble is, it's the more painful one too.

There's not really a lot to analyse if you go out first. But if I bubble, I invariably end up going through the "Did I really play my best?" / "If only that" routine.

Educational, just not a lot of fun

I have bubbled in 2 or 3 freerolls the past few nights and i also have been first 200 out.
As much as i have learned in bubbling, i think i much rather take my 2 hours that i lost and spend them on some sort of work. Or productive family time.
However, i am not questioning the knowledge is power nor the fact that bubbling makes you hungrier and teaches a valuable lesson.

I voted bastard. Both choices involve losing. Losing is no fun. They're both quite possibly equally painful.

i don't really understand why people are agreeing with this - what's stopping you from gaining experience having been the first person out by simply starting another tourney?

If I have Kings and my opponent kicks me out of the tournament with Queens, I won't mind very much if this happens in one of the first hands. I'll just start the next tournament and that's that. I didn't lose a lot of time.

However, if I've played a great game the entire tournament and the above thing happens on the bubble it'll p!ss me off pretty badly. I just lost hours and hours of good play to a suckout -> what a waste.

just the feeling of busting out on the bubble is way worse than busting out early...other than the fact of gaining some experience....it just fells horibble knowing that you played 3 hours and gained no money....

This question of where would you choose to bust out, first hand or bubble is a rather dumb one.

If, I had a choice I certainly don’t want to spend 4 to 8 or more hours online, and maybe days in a large live game, wasting my time and money in a tournament, only to get busted on the bubble.

As far as looking at that scenario has a learning tool. Maybe a rookie might appreciate that, but for me, please give me a fn break

I picked getting knocked out first because I hate playing for hours just to lose.

I picked bubble, but it really depends on the tourney...

Live - Bubble, you can get reads on the other players for the next time you play. Depending on the tourney, you drove/flew to where the tourney is and you may not be able to register for another one for a couple of hours, days, months...

Online - 1st, you can usually hop into another tourney within minutes, at least a minimum of a day. If it's a big tourney, maybe a week.

was playing last night in live tourney and got knockedot on the bubble. was really annoyed. got all my money in with A10 and was up against 66 so basically 50/50. flop comes down A3A i was happy but not exstatic cause a 6 would still knock me out and course a 6 comes on the river. was annoyed but gained lot of repect from people playing and watchin so i would rather go out on the bubble than first out cause no one thinks that guy is a good player

I voted bubble. It's just painful knowing that you were so close and frustrating knowing all the time you spent was for nothing (money wise).

first one out of course, less time lost for the same amount of money lost.


bubble is like, look I just wasted 4 hours!

This is online of course. God id be pissed if I went out first on a live tourney given my extremely low live poker playing id feel like a donk.

I concur.

I voted BASTARD. Because any finish that's not in the money is lame imo.

I also voted bastard because it's usually the first word out of my mouth when someone eliminates me on the bubble or knocks me out first.

Personally, I feel worse about going out early than on the bubble. Going out early affects my pride, while bubbling says to me I didn't make it but I coulda been a contender.

I did one of those free-rolls on stars the other day that only gives 27 spots to a round 2 game and finished 29th. That was real sore and took about 5 and a half hours!

bubble, you have gained lots of experiance and had fun in the process.

Well i agree with what your saying, however, with my tournament exeperience if i go out first its usually on some guy that had to run and my ten hand gets busted by a 74o. Therefore in my scenario if i go out first, i basically learned nothing besides people like to go all-in early tourny.
Maybe on higher levels of poker you can gain more from an early exit.

well i guess nothing's necessarily stopping you, but i suppose some people might not want to play another tourney after going first out due to tilt and/or ****-this reasons. or they'd play another and go out early as well. if you bubble, it means you were committed to playing for at least x amount of time, x being pretty long if it's a MTT. still, i don't think that little experience is generally worth all that time + the cost of the buy-in
