Playing in first WPT event

Hello, I am playing in my first WPT event in two weeks, in Maryland. Any advice on how to handle this environment? It's the largest field I've ever done for the most money I've ever done. I'm a little nervous about not playing well because of all of it. I don't want to bust out early for stupid mental reasons. Any advice is welcomed!

Just remember everyone at that table is a living breathing person just like you. Forget about your nervousness and look for theirs. Remember you are there to win.. Remind yourself at the table that you know how to play poker and this is just another tournament, don't think about the money or the field early in the tournament just focus on the people at your table. Good luck play well. :)

Forget about the money aspect and just try and play poker. If you think about potential losses/earnings too much it will mess your head up.

Make no space for luck in early stages. Focus, pick your spots and after a few won pots hopefully you'll feel more relaxed and confident , which will probably get your game to the level you know you can play.

Try to remember the betting patterns of your opponents on early stages, so you can use that later. Dont be afraid of the money. Also avoid flips early.

You can play more loose at the beginning and try to win big pots with small investment. Good luck

Thanks! I'm feeling a lot better already I'm new to the area and casino but have won a significant amount in cash games there the past couple nights which has helped a ton also. Much appreciated!

Take awhile and let your nerves settle, get used to the environment then chip up! Good luck to you.

In tournies that are important to me i will let the bad players weed each other out in the beginning. Some one once said tournaments dont begin until you get into the antes. So pre antes only play monsters. Then start playing poker,

Show up early and scope out the physical environment. If you are in a really cold seat or a really hot seat, dress accordingly (and have whatever clothing it takes to deal with either on hand). Make sure you know the tournament rules and the house rules. House rules are probably the same as for cash, so you already have that. Strike up a conversation with someone at the tournament desk, or a tourney official and ask about specific rules. For a WPT event, you will probably have a Big Blind ante, and all hands show at showdown. Verify this. Make sure to know when BB ante starts - I think it was second hand the last time I played (at a completely different venue).

In other words, get comfortable. It's going to (hopefully) be a long day. Don't get taken by surprise by something you could have seen coming.

Edit: just noticed that this thread is three years old. How'd you do Buff? The advice still applies.

Just go and have fun. It will be hard not to be nervous but you have to think that there will be a lot of people that will be nervous also. Just do your best try and play smart and just have fun
