This is a discussion on Open Raise More Than 3x Middle Stages? Why? within the online poker forums, in the Tournament Poker section; Why some players open raise more than 3x in the middle stages of a tournament? The vast majority of them are weak players but I
Especially in a freeroll, players simply do not care. If they like their hand or want to charge more for hands that are strong but vulnerable (say, TT or JJ) they're going to raise to whatever they want.
The good thing for us as solid players is that we can exploit this by jamming over their opens at wider stack depths with stronger hands, and I've had people stack KJo against my AKs for 22BBs in EP. Just wait for strong hands and punish them for it, as they'll feel commited after putting so much of their stack in the middle and stack off with less than marginal hands at times. It is annoying though, because we have to play tighter as a result and there isn't a lot of room to manuever at the 30BB or even 40BB stack depths, where we should normally be able to call with speculative hands like suited connectors or small pocket pairs, but since the SPR is reduced by such large preflop raises it's better to stick strictly to stronger holdings and punish them when we flop something strong.
his standard open raise amount ~6x multiplier!!!![Of course I was playing in a freeroll].
Are they totally ignorant about nowadays sizings?
imo that the key words. If he wants to open with a big size and play huge pots - why not, he can do it. The most important thing is not a size, it's the constant usage of the same size in this given stage, so that it doesn't give away your range at all.
And I believe the size of OR is somewhat dependent on the limits you play.
Raises are getting wild and crazy and it's what make the game great and unpredictable. This happens for a combination of reasons but in general is becoming more common. Be careful how you respond to these bets especially 3 and 4 bets.

If someone opens for more chips then just tighten your range accordingly. If they seem to open too often and you are at 20 bbs then start shoving some low pairs and suited broadways on them that you would normally call.
