This is a key part of your growth in poker because it will directly reflect your return on investment - ROI.
So selecting tournaments in which you have greater profitability and the field has lower skills than yours will be of paramount importance for you to be profitable, your bankroll must also have good management control to make a profit and even increase the bankroll to raise the level of buy-in.

Selecting tournaments that start at close times is a good practice as playing tournaments at different levels can confuse your strategy.

If you consider yourself to be a very strong player, then winning a free tournament you can play on a non-bankroll and play the tournament you want or you are sure this may be the exception, but it's best to play with your bankroll and try to win wherever you can

Tournaments at the micros are all much the same in terms of ability. If you believe you have an edge over the field then selecting slower formats will suit you because the variance swings will be much less dramatic compared to turbos and super turbos.

As you move up stakes, the average ability improves, so you may find that structure is not so much of a factor. Finding tournaments with overlays, lots of sattelites, or some kind of promotion is often a good way to find softer tournaments, because lower stakes players might have decided to take a punt in it.

In top of what has already been mentioned field size is also an important part of game selection. Larger fields give larger top prices, but its also more difficult to get those top prices, which increase variance. For people trying to build up a bankroll this is problematic, because it force them to play lower stakes, if they want to follow good bankroll management. In top of that it can be mentally challenging to go through extended periods of losses, where maybe you dont even reach a final table, and it can be difficult to know, if you are even a winning player. And for those reasons I definitely recommend having at least a decent chunk of smaller field MTTs (say <300 players) or even SnGs in the mix.

Another important choise is tournaments with or without bounties. The latter are more popular on pokerstars these days, and in my opinion they tend to be softer. But you need to be able and willing to make the nessesary adjustments and accept, that you will be involved in more huge and often multiway all-in preflop spots, when there are bounties in play. So PKOs are not good for people, who hate "gambling" and bad beats, where for instance their AK gets cracked by someone with a bad hand chasing after bounties.

first of all, you need to consider the prize pool if you can theoretically get into the money and this prize is more than the buy-in, then play this particular tournament

If you can find tourneys with overlay that's always sweet. There used to be more of these on ACR, but they are harder to find now.

I think the first thing you look for is formats where you understand the icm.

The next thing to look for is weak players. This is easier if you have color coded players or you can use sharkscope.

If you have too many "good" games to choose from, pick the ones that will maximize your hrly earnings.

Hi :)
You are absolutely right. Nevertheless, many beginners do not understand which tournaments they should participate in and how to correctly calculate their banroll management system. And that's why this once again proves the fact that freerolls are the best option for beginners. Especially the freerolls of our community.

I think the one should consider their Bankroll and the value a tournament has to offer..

Sometimes style also matters. Turbo makes sense for those who want fast tourneys, KO tourneys calls for more Action..
