Fun post.

Recently I've experienced some interesting run of cards early in events.

In one event I did not play the first 24 hands. Not even from the bb.

Last week I did not play in the first 29 hands, not even from the bb.

Yesterday evening - was my longest streak that I'm aware of. I did not play the first 39 hands in a 500gtd turbo. LOL
I ended up placing 6th in this event out of 260 runners. But for a while there - I didn't think I was ever going to play a hand.

Sure does keep the VPIP low.

I'm kind of wondering if this is a leak for me - in the blinds - but I'm pretty certain I'm defending properly, just not getting even marginally playable hands when in those positions. I will readily admit - I'm pretty tight in SB, and I think that is a good thing rather than not.

I'm sure this has happened before - to everyone - but lately for me I've been noticing it. Probably because this stretch has been happening in several events at the same time.

I guess its all just circumstance - and the flow of the game - and the hands dealt.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed large stretches of time at the beginning of events - where you do no play one hand of poker.

What is your longest stretch at the beginning of events - where you do not play one hand of poker - not even from the blinds?

I have been in tournaments and not played a hand until the 55 min break and finished on the final table. I will play for the blinds some. In tournaments I usually run a VPIP of 10 to 12. Is this too tight? I don't like playing out of position unless it's AA KK QQ AK or AQ.

I wonder how many hands that was? No less than 40 to be sure.

Everyone has their own style of play certainly Gus. To be honest, 10-12 is very TAG, bordering on NIT (in my opinion).

I consider myself a TAG - with a little bit of bluffiness mixed in - and I have 5 tables running currently. My vpips are 17, 18, 22, 36 (turbo), and 19.

I don't mind playing oop - with marginal hands, however for me the price has to be right, and the villain has to be right. :)

I'm going to run leak detector and see what it says and try to adjust from there. I think it is way to tight also. When I first started playing holdem was loose and aggressive slinging chips everywhere. I had been a Stud player all my life and played it as long as I could before that ship sank. Have just recently started playing holdem exclusively. It's tough switching games after all those years playig Stud. I got Poker Tracker 4 and now just have to figure out the inner workings of it.

It’s doesn’t matter how many hands you didn’t play, if you don’t have cards for playing just don’t play. It’s simple, any saved chip is earned one. In tournaments you need to win your flips for winning, be in right spot in a right time. It’s a marathon , not a sprint.

Card dependant. Sometimes you just blind out and nothing can be done. 3 or 4 big blind is a good general rule.

Hey Gus - if your not aware ACR runs Stud events every day - at the micro level there are 2 stud events that run every day. I accidentally registered for one once - and I was TOTALLY lost!!

Been there. That's actually par for me as of late. It doesn't matter if it's a sng or regular trny I usually don't make a move for a couple orbits or so. But it doesn't matter how you start in poker it only matters where you place.

On a couple of sites yes, but on others no,

Happens to me with astonishing regularity on two sites specifically. Further, it is once in a blue moon that something I have folded hits the board, which really underlines the fact you are being dealt rags.

When I do expand my range, raise my VPIP it never pays off. I have not bothered defending my BB or SB for the last couple of years unless the hand borders on premium.

On other sites I appear to get a much better distribution of cards.

There are times where I fold hands until a half hour since the tournament started.

Yes I play them once in awhile but they are hi/lo. The only stud tourney they have starts at 12:15am. If you can ever get a ring game they are micro only and I last longer in the sack than they do. They have the same die hard players hanging on to the past and aren't profitable. I can get a f u n game on poker stars but it's play dollars. For what's left it's just not worth the trouble for me. I'm getting better at Holden and for now the challenge of learning and improving is enough for me. I'm already up to a b level break even player. I have found that my tight style plays well on single table sit n go and am starting to show a profit there. Seven stud RIP.

Didn't count the hands - I remember being card-dead for 2 hours in a casino - think I ended up punting

Patience is key!

I had cases when I didn’t play a single hand during the whole tournament.

39 hands is pretty extreme, but yeah these things happen. In general there is not much, we can do, other than to wait for the card dead streak to end. But if I literally have not played a hand in 30-40 minutes, maybe my cards dont matter so much, especially if I get a chance to steal from CO or BTN. So I will sometimes use it to widen my standard ranges at least a little bit. Whereas if I have been running really hot, and my HUD-stats look like a maniac, then this is not the time, I make a light 3-bet with A3s or QJs, because I assume, people will be more likely to not give me credit and play back at me.
