Ok down to 3 handed in a small tourney. 1st place pays $800 - 3rd $300 . 1st to act and short stacked ( 8 BB's ) I shove KJ. Good shove or bad ?

is relative, although nobody recommends doing it, although many do it or with worse hands like 109s etc. I think you should close your range at the beginning of the tournament and open it up while you win more hands.

I would shove being short stack. 3 handed you probably have the best chance or coin flip if called.

If you wait any longer your going have to double up twice or worse triple up once. How big were your opponets stacks? Were they playing gambley or wreckless?

I think it's a bad move with luck you'll be successful but you may end up losing the inverted chips
