Does anyone else hate rebuys as much as I do?

Your post suggests that you are not really altering your playstyle or tournament strategy to suit the nature of the tables in rebuys.

If you are only going to play premium hands (and move all in preflop), then at best you are usually only looking at an 80/20 favourite which means you will be walking away - some of the time. You will also only be doubling up (all going well) once or twice in the first hour. This still leaves you with a comparably small stack and you are still at risk of wiping out with an unlucky shove.

You need a stack which can withstand the huge variance of the first hour, and to build this you often need a LAG approach along with a disciplined approach to rebuys.

RcRocketman was spot on - Rebuys will favour a more skilled player more so than a freezeout, although on the wrong end of a bad beat, it often does not seem to be the case.

I like rebuys. My second biggest cash in a buy in was on a rebuy. I think it is actually easy to win as a patient player. I don't play loose, rarely rebuy but I always add on. Once the rebuy is over I start playing more aggressively and find that many of the people who were super lag will now play very weak.

Yeah i am definatly not a fan of them. Although i find them sometimes worthwhile. The big rebuy tourneys on PS like the 3+ like the 50k guarenteed. That is a joke as the payout structure is so spread out that even if you finished like 100th out of 6000 because there paying of the guy in 1000 like $6 it means your gona get a super "ROI"but it would have taken you like 6 hours. Those are close to a complete waste of time. However the set 180 3.30+ are good. I haven't done that well in them but i can see how they could be profitable if you get a nice finish. I cap my self at $9 so i get 1 rebuy 1 add on max or else it just gets out of control on those. There might be some guys which are going in there prepared to rebuy like 9 times at least and expect to make ful return on profit however i am not one of those players very risky if u don't have a huge bankroll

The problem with rebuy tournament is that a lot of players keep playing it like a rebuy After the rebuy period is over. IMHO.

I only spent 9-10$ on these, but its the amount of time for a MTT rebuy that is the tricky part. One of things that should be considered is when you actually register is you have to put it in your head to commit to a long haul if you TRULY want to win...these were about 9-10hrs each so I guess I invested a buck an hr...but my return was about 20$ an hr on one and 9$ an hr on the other. Things have changed since I won those and I beleive its 50k grntd now. I've tried one or two but knew I wouldn't be committed to the time..so I kinda just donked out.

I dont understand the problem. If people want to play 27o all-in vs then I am just happy. And if I get sucked out on, I just re-buy.

I play alot of rebuys.

I hate the lunatics that push with any 2 cards but they sure do beef up the prize pool.

I rebuy at the start and play ultra tight.

This strategy seems to work well.

A limp with AA from early position can work well, provided somebody raises.(that's pretty much a sure thing)

If you can build a stack, it can be pretty easy to cash and there is a nice pay off if you make the final table.

I recommend taking the add on if you make it to the break.

Personally I don't like to rebuy again if I bust out but I will if it's close to the break or if it is a money added game.

I can give you some advice. Dont play too reckless just cause its a re-buy, but dont be afraid to get involved. Just make sure you are ahead of their range.
Once the maniacs have been knocked out (usally a while after the re-buy period has ended), the game tend to tighten up.
When it does adjust your game accordingly.
Remember if a tourney cost 1$ to enter u should probably have around 300$ in your account. (1$ is approx equivilent to a 6$ non re-buy)
If you dont have that much in your account, then you are probably underrolled.

I SUGGEST READING THIS WHOLE POST IF YOU WANT SOME REBUY STRATEGY FROM A SUCCESSFUL REBUY PLAYER!!!!!!!

I have done very well in rebuys and they are A LOT easier to cash in than a normal freezout.

My strategy is this:

1) During rebuy stage, once there is one player (yes just one) who has used a rebuy or if there are any players with well over 1500 chips, YOU MUST REBUY! So 9 times out of 10, you are rebuying right off the bat before you see a hand. This is the same idea as always having the max buy-in at a cash game, you want to get max value when you hit a big hand.

2) See cheap flops, also if you find people raising a lot preflop with anything, pick a hand and come over the top and try to double up. Even if you think you are only 60/40, still come over the top and go for the early double up. During the rebuy period you want to take shots, because you can always rebuy and try again.

3) DON'T PLAY REBUYS IF YOU ARE SCARED TO REBUY.

4) Once you are about 10 mins or less away from the break and the end of the rebuy period you need to look at a couple things. If you haven't doubled up and are at 4000 or less in chips you want to start pushing every unraised pot for a chance at a lucky double up. Seriously, yes. The reason is the blinds are usually 50/100 at this stage and if you continue to play tight you will probably head into the break with 3400ish in chips. If you take those chances you will steal some blinds and maybe get a call, where you will either double up or bust and just rebuy back to 3000. So TAKE SHOTS LATE IN THE REBUY HOUR and DON'T BE AFRAID TO REBUY!

Now if you have a healthy stack of lets say 6000+ you don't want to take as many shots but still keep this concept in mind.

5) ALWAYS ADDON NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!! Some people say, "I don't addon if I have a big stack, there is no point." You most certainly have to addon in every single rebuy tournament you play. I see people refuse the addon so much and it boggles my mind. Obviously the goal of the tournament is to win, but you want to try to save 1 buy-in when you win??!?! If somebody who won the big $3r on stars without adding on, would they feel amazing about the $9,000 or whatever 1st place is, or would they feel amazing that they "saved" $3?!?!?! It is so crazy not to addon, yes even as chip leader, you need to addon.

6) With my rebuy strategy I average 3-5 buyins per tournament. The initial buy-in plus 1st rebuy and the addon. And occasionally I have to double rebuy if my big hand doesn't hold up or if I am getting low near the 1st break I will take some chances and possibly have to rebuy there. So according to my BR management I take the buy in of the rebuy and multiply by 4. If that is still less than 2% of my roll, I will play. (ex. $5 rebuy x 4 = $20, if I have a $1000 BR or higher I can play $5 rebuys)

A benefit of rebuys is a minimum cash is about 6-7x the buyin, so if you did decent and only are in for 4-5 buy-ins, you are doing good. Plus, a lot of people do not rebuy, so what this does is it essentially makes the 2nd portion of the tournament a deep stack with a very easy shot at cashing. (ex. The $5r PLO tournament on cake at 12:30 EST gets about 200 entrants. Once the rebuy period is over there are around 70 players left and cake pays top 40. If you played my strategy correctly, you are usually in a spot to cash even with just a modest stack.)

So yes this is a long post, but if you want to succeed at rebuys I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this approach. Again, I have done very well with rebuys and they are my favorite game to play!

The problem with rebuy tournament is that a lot of players keep playing it like a rebuy After the rebuy period is over. IMHO.

In my opinion this is part of what makes them so profitable. Half of them continue to play like they can still rebuy, the other half overcompensate and play very tight and passive. Both sides are very exploitable.

Another thing that is very profitable are all the fools who are trying to dbl their stack with any two cards 5 min before re-buy period ends.

I never play rebuys online... I do not mind them in casino's because i normally know the players.... So i have learnt who to call and who not to call.

Hey buddy, i am totally with you regarding this...
One thing i hate about poker tournaments is this rebuys options...
And i never ever play tournies with rebuy options, cause it has toooo many donks to handle...
But i think that allowing one add on at the first break is ok...
But rebuys, really hate them...

TIPS

It's always important you rebuy during the first hand, so you get the extra chips, and make sure you have enough money for the addon. You can not look at a 2.25$ rebuy tourney as a 2$ tournament, you have to look at it as atleast a 6.25$ considering 1R+1A, if not more. Play very tight in the begining and push hard when you get your big hand, any pair, try to play or any high cards try to play and see if they hit. Play them strong, bet pot or allin. Most will call and just hope, but make sure you have the advantage. GOOD LUCK to you
