I used to just play freeroll and micro tourneys but have started playing small sit and go's on ACR. Just wondering what people think are the main differences between playing small stakes sit and go's and tourneys in term of strategy? Thanks!
In SnG you don't know when it will start, but you know how many players there will be.
In MTT you know when it will start, but you don't know how many players there will be.
Usually MTT are more crowded place and during late registration player pool will grow significantly. And usually they last much longer.
Playing small SnG (9,10) you can frequently get ITM by playing tight. In MTT getting ITM isn't enough, but to win significantly you need both skill and luck.
SnG's play a little faster and a little tighter from early on compared to MTTs. SnG's also have a much higher chance of cashing compared to MTT's so you don't have to worry so much about doubling out only 1 or 2 hands. Play a little tighter at the early levels and you can usually have 1 or 2 people donk out but after than just play a bit more aggressive and you should put yourself in great chance to cash.
I have great bankroll management, it started at $0 and it's still at $0
One of the differences between tournaments from SnG is the duration of the game, the size of the starting stack in relation to the blinds, the growth of the blinds, the moment when the ante appears, the distribution of prizes. Also, the dispersion in SnG is smaller than in MTT.
SNG is not particularly different from MTT on the strategy of the game. Also, the SNG is an excellent preparation for more exhausting MMT tournaments, prize money in which at the final tables are much more attractive than in the SNG.
re: Poker & Differences between tourneys and sit and go's.
The difference for me is that when I play a single table sit & go I'm striving for a 1st place win, which is realistic within an hour. You can get there with skill and discipline.
With MTTs, especially the big ones (thousands of entries), 1st place is a completely irrational goal (for me). It takes a number of hours to just place in these MTTs. To get to that point you need skill, discipline, patience AND luck.
Yes, you NEED luck to make it to the final table of a big MTT. You need your Aces to hold up. You also need some of your lower pair hands (e.g. 99 or 55) to beat the other guy's Aces. You need your flush not to be beat by an with a fourth club on the river.
Generally small stakes sngs are more of an icm game, where in mtts the icm doesnt really come into play until you get close to the money. Also the mtts tend to play deeper so deep stack skill comes more into play.
The main difference is the variance, in the sits and go there is less variance than in the tournaments, therefore you need less bank.
I the tournaments play more aggressive than a sit and go, because I'm interested in going far.
The one difference i've notice is that there are a lot more players who are donkeys or bingo players and in sit n gos you'll find actually people who play the game for real. For tournaments you have to be running well if you want to place in the top 10.
