hi, firstly, i apologise if this is not the correct place to post this question.

i've been playing poker for 18 months.

Played 80k hands at the micros and im a marginal winner of more or less 1BB per 100. Still got a lot to learn and im winning only because when i'm on a downswing, i stop playing for 1 week or 2. that's not a great solution, i know :p

played 30k hands flhe, still learning and hopefully breaking even till now

The local casinos around here have only tournaments and no cash games. I played live twice and really liked the experience. But to learn how to play tourneys, i'd like to know if it will be worth it and i could show a little profit with a lot of learning and playing experience, not going every week and donating money :p

also, i'm planning to buy the three volume of harrington, i saw a lot of recommendations on every site.

I would like to know what do you all think about the structure:
buyin: $50
1 rebuy: $ 50
1 addon: $50
blind start at 25/50
stack: 10k
5k bonus if you enter before the 3rd level

about 40 players and 6-7 places are paid.

Thank you for your time reading my post :)

In my opinion, if you are just starting out in live tournaments, you should start at the lower buy-in levels with no re-entry or add-on. The cost adds up and you are probably up against players that have more experience than you. Starting at the lower buy-in gives you experience and doesn't hurt your bankroll as much if you don't cash. Start low, get your feet wet and once you are feeling more confident, then move up in buy-ins. Good luck!!!!

hi thank you for your reply, this is the smallest buyin available :( I was thinking about playing online mtts to gain some experience.

I will also have to save for a bankroll, i was thinking of 20 buyins since i'll be playing once per week, if i get low, i may add more after 2-3 months of playing.

I know that i may not be winning much at first, i'm not really going with the idea of winning big but i would like to know if this structure is good or not so that i can atleast break even and not having to inject money in my bankroll each time.

I was asking if the structure was good or not because i read that the tournament structures may impact the way of playing and the amount of luck involved.

This is a pretty typical live tournament, I'm assuming the levels are 20-30 min long. With the limited rebuy (1) and (I'm assuming a 10K) addon, this tournament should play a bit more conservatively than others. Also you'll find that the tournament very rarely plays completely through, players will chop most of the time, most likely at around 5-handed. Be very aware of stack sizes and upcoming level changes, especially in the later levels (T$1K+).

Don't see level times. I am going to guess 20 minutes per lev all the way through? You need to consider lev times and where antes start and ante to blind ratios to come up with a plan. But you know what they say everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth so win or lose try to learn something for the next one and have fun.

the blind level is 20 mins and antes start at 25 after 8 level. sorry for omitting that.

Thank you for all your replies.

I have already bought the three volumes of harrington, i've already read the first one, i intend to read the other two and then get back to the first to start studying.

I will then start playing online for some experience.

I'll start playing live on January. I asked this question now to know more about the structure and what to take into account when studying and playing online. This will also give me time to save for a bankroll

It is good to practice at freeroll and maybe you should look at the other players action carefully.

I think its a great structure. You should consider this a 150.00 tournament. You won't be effective if you don't.

1st. Buy in at the beginning, get the 5k bonus.

2nd. Re-buy immediately.

3. Unless you really chip up, I would take the add on. You will find that live poker is SLOW compared to online. If I could get some extra hands to find a good one, I would take it.

4. Play tight. Because live is so slow people get really impatient. You have to use some discipline, don't feel rushed and play trash.

Play tight at the beginning, because some of the guys will be ready for rebuy. Use smart your position and fix the players, who are aggressive at the beginning. It's ok to make a rebuy, but don't put money on adds on.
20 minutes per level is pretty fast, because sometimes you may play just 2-3 hands per level. It's a great experience and I am sure you are going to like it. Nice way to change the environment from online poker.

thank you for your reply.

add on is not a good idea then? or is there a particular situation where it is profitable to buy?

when is rebuy a good option? early if you're risking your stack when many players are playing loosely and you got a pretty decent chance of doubling or tripling up? or is there another situation where you can play looser than usual early?

And for example, till what level can you rebuy if you can do it till level 10 when facing loose passive players and loose aggressive players?

Books Harrington little dated. But as a basis, I would recommend to read it. It contains the basic concepts of tournament poker distinguishes it from Cash.
And since you're not a fish in a poker, the next book I would recommend "Applications of No-Limit Hold'em. Matthew Janda"

If you allow your bankroll, why not?

Hi! I played tours from $0,55 to $44, the maximum success in a tour of $0,55 (the 2nd place, 9 hours of a game). Tours require patience and forces, there are a wish to hit a jackpot and to feast, but a hole always nearby, it is possible to fall) Good luck!

I play in these alot. Lots of fish rebuying often and shoving with inferior hands. Play tight until the add on. Also, you are not giving all the info. What is the house rake? That can make or break a tournament.
