A 'HUD' is a Heads Up Display.
It's an overlay which works in conjunction with a poker tracker and shows you statistical data of your (and your opponents at the table) play, in real-time.
If you know how to use them, it is extremely beneficial, yes.
There are lots of threads on the forum discussing the various programs available and how to use them.

Almost all have free trial versions to use for 30 days...
I just started using one and even with just a week of experience
i can highly recommend it...
It's so much easier to make good decisions when you can look up
opponents stats instead of having to "guess" what type of player he is...
You will have to learn a bit about the stats and how to interpret them,
but even newbies can instantly benefit.
I already wonder how i could play without one...
Purists might say you should be able to do the same using only your brain,
but at least mine isn't powerful enough to store a perfect replay of every poker
hand i ever played... ( or maybe i just didn't try hard enough )
