You haven't even played yet and you're thinking about tipping after you win? lol...I like it a lot with respect to sports psychology of winning!

My answer depends on the buyin and how much you won.

I don't tip that much on a min-cash. Other times I win big enough to tip ~5%.

Usually there is a "tip jar" at the cage or wherever they are paying you out. The tips are usually shared among the staff and are greatly appreciated.

I have also been at a room that just asked me how much I wanted to tip and took it off of my winnings.
Good luck !

Go ahead Krista - imagine you have won and are tipping the staff.

Get comfortable with the image - it is your destiny.

Good luck !

LOL - you tip when you are paid-out.

So you are not tipping for each hand.

Good luck !

I work as a poker dealer - mostly cash, but I occasionally deal tournaments. Tips I have received for tournaments were 5-20% of first place winnings. I rarely get tipped for tourneys though.

I've played in quite a few live tournaments and cashed in big on a few and those I did tip the dealer. The way I figure it is if the dealer is giving you good enough cards to win then you can give the dealer a small percentage of your winnings.

Absolutely. Most of the tourneys I've been involved with involved top 2 or 3 finishers tipping the dealer. I have seen some smaller cashers tip but usually it's the top money winners that give. And if there's a chop, usually, the discussion includes a dealer gratuity in the negotiations.

I played in my first live tournament the other day and made it to the final table. I was curious about how tipping works so I asked another player how much people usually tip. He said half of the prize money, That seems like a lot. Maybe I'll stick to cash games where I can just tip $1 whenever the pot comes my way.

I think he was just pulling your leg. The big winners usually look after the dealer at the end of the tournament. For cash tables, it seems to be customary to tip a buck or two for pots from $10 to $25, and increase from there if you are feeling happy.

hmm this is a very good question

occasionally i hear that six figure winners for first place only tip 2-3%

why would anyone who score 100k+ for example tip 5-20% .. thats ridiculous IMO

Asked the same. So the best answers were:
Tell him/her to get it from his "employer".
and
I spoke with a couple of Tournament Directors in Las Vegas about this and they all suggested 3% if you cash. This was less than I guessed so that was a plus.
Though Victoria Coren tipped £50 000 when won £500 000.

how does that work in a tournament and how much?
Like everything in poker... it depends!
  • Is there a staff fee deducted from the prize pool automatically? If yes, the casino has decided how much you should tip (similar to a restaurant adding a tip automatically). You are under no obligation to tip further! That said, many folks do.
  • Are you playing recreationally? Did you have fun? Then consider tossing the dealer a bone... you aren't playing to pay the bills any way!
  • Was your ROI in the tournament HUGE? This can happen for a variety of reasons, overlay from a GTD tourney being a primary one. Then why not throw a bone of goodness at the dealer. Don't go crazy, think in %'s of win after subtracting expenses.
One thing to keep in mind as a recreational player in the USA. Expenses, like tips (and hotels, dinner etc), are not something you can write off on your taxes as losses. If you win big enough to have to pay taxes, don't expect to subtract anything from it (other than your gambling losses... which you need to have good records of).

I know of a guy who tips 5% for 1st, 3% for 2nd, 2% for 3rd and 1% for 4th and 5th.

I know another guy who always tips 10%

I know a regular at Harrah's Las Vegas who tips 20% when she fires one bullet and cashes 1st or 2nd (or makes a deal). She seems rich and doesn't seem to care about money.

It all comes down to personal preference, do what makes you feel good. :)

I tip then if I win in top 3. Otherwise they get the money from the people buying extra chips for $5.
