One thing I have noticed is that I have significantly less of a problem tilting and getting my hands in bad when playing live rather than playing online. I do not think my overall play is different, but for some reason when I am playing online I get frustrated far more easily. I play NL2&5 online, so the competition is pretty similar to live. I just have a much bigger problem tilting online. Any thoughts on why this might be?

Hi Darth

There could be a number of reasons why this is, but I would expect the main reason that you tilt online when you wouldn't tilt live is that when you play live you are perhaps more in control of your emotions as you have real people around you and therefore either consciously or sub-consciously, you manage the situation better so that people don't get a read on you, or you simply show more respect.

In online poker, there is no one but yourself to control your emotions and no one impacting on how you behave. I base this on , think of all the crazy things that people say and do on social media, that they would never dream of doing in the live world, ie when face to face with the person they are talking about or behaving to,

I think it is a case of merging the real world with online and behave online how you would in real life.

To help, here is a link to a Cardschat article that may also assist you manage tilt.

For myself, I found a way to combat tilt. I either watch poker streaming or listen to quiet music in parallel when playing. You might also like this way!

I sometimes have the same problem man. I find that because im at home and not in a public place, like a live event where you need to compose yourself. I tend to also tilt alot more in my own space, especially if im by myself.

Good to here I'm not alone haha
I think you're right. Part of what I'm thinking is that maybe someone can be too alone with their thoughts. I tried the music thing that one of the above posters advised and that has definitely helped so far.

In the comfort of you own home no one can see you so you tend to let your emotion show a little more. In a live event you dont want people to see your emotions so you usually suck it up and move on to the next hand. When letting your emotions out at home you might think it feels better to be venting but I think it usually hurts your mentality. You dont feel the need to suck it up and move on because no one is there to get a physical read on you but that is actually you beating yourself.

Optimism and positivity can go a long way. Even in the privacy of your own home by yourself.

I always seem to go on tilt , when I should have won a hand. But I do realize it is poker , also know for gambling. Now I don't go on tilt, cause anyone can play any hands they want and if they catch and beat me I don't get upset anymore. If I did then why gamble?

Online, nobody gets to hear your colourful language when things go bad...if you get too angry at a live casino, you may get a warning from the poker manager.

I would advise you not to come up with crazy ideas for the game that will make you nervous

I, like you, more often tilt in online poker than in live poker. In live poker, I can control my emotions and stay calm in almost any situation. In online poker, a few bad hands are enough for me to get nervous and make mistakes. The same goes for downswing, in online poker it happens much more often and lasts much longer than in live poker. For a long time I tried to understand why there is such a difference between online poker and live poker, but I still have not found the answer to this question.

I have had same problems. Luckily I don't tilt anymore. You just have to train to avoid tilting and if you notice that you tilt then close the computer.

I can only agree with your statement. It could be a question of comfort or just sitting next to other people that you can focus more on your game than thinking about your losses.

A book called The Mental Game of Poker by Jared Tendler helped me a lot with my tilt issues. I highly recommend for anyone who struggles with tilt at the poker table.

It helps to remember that the cards are random, and all you can do is make good decisions. It also helps to multi-table. That way your too focused on decisions to notice results too much.
