With things opening up hopefully in a few weeks, months (canada), I loved home games but with friends getting busier with their lives, family, and some losing interest, what is everyone's thoughts here on inviting strangers (perhaps not complete strangers), to your home games.

Any tips, things to vet/watch out for, proper etiquette?
Any interesting stories for those who have done it

thanks

I only did it one time and it was a disaster. He was part of a group I belonged to and he seemed fine in the group.

He arrived at our house early so we decided to play some pool with him before poker. He had already started drinking. He put his beer on the felt of my $6000 pool table. I should have sent him packing then.

He attempted to light up a cigarette - and we told him no smoking in our house. So he went in our backyard to smoke. When he came back in he was covered in mud - all over his pants and he sat on my pool table.

Before poker ever got started we showed him the door.

I don't recommend inviting strangers to your house lol.

Thanks for the insight, actually curious how he even managed to get covered in mud (sounds like it's not just on the shoes).

What a bad person he was, how could he? i personally cannot invite somebody i don't know or never had contact with to my home... That's a no go for me. Hope the poster will get this lesson from your experience and cancel the invitation.

Evidently he slipped in our backyard.

Common sense alone should answer that question. Please follow your first mind don't allow bad things to happen when it can be prevented by plane common sense.

I think it would be good to meet them through Cardschat first to know how are these people you want to invite, so in this way they will not be complete strangers, in the case of Debi, I am so sorry that she has gone through something like that, it is frustrating and it really makes you not want to invite someone else to your house for life, but, I also think that must be people there who can behave in someone else's house, for example I would love to play with people from Cardschat that I know live, they hear and feel very good people whenever I chat with them during some tournaments. That's just my opinion. Regards.

Yeah that's one of those things as well, where there are definitely examples that scare you away, e.g. what Debi experienced, but also times when you think about it, all your friends were strangers at one point. That and hoping, not trusting, that most people are decent or have common sense not to overreach their hospitality etc.

Anyways i'll see how things go, before covid, i use to extend invitations to friends of friends (not like cardschat or reddit) and no problems yet.

It is difficult to bring someone home if you do not know him very well, you can have unpleasant experiences then or later, it is preferable to invite very close friends and that's it!

I guess if your house layout allows it you could have an outdoor garden party, or something similar where the private and guest areas are clearly separated.

So would you invite random Cardchatter to your home then :hmmmm2:

Why would you want to invite a person who
a/ believes that the Earth is flat
b/ thinks that the Moon landing was fake
c/ extra terrestrial aliens are watching us
d/ and so on...

I would be very careful with house games. Personally I would never organize a house game where I didn't know all the people attending before-hand.

And I think that if you are going to invite, then you do not need to tune yourself to the negative in advance, the invitation may turn out to be a good person

There are a LOT of CC members I would invite to my home. However they would need to meet certain criteria lol.

I had a CC member stalk me and follow me to Biloxi, MS one time - it was not fun. He read on the forum that I was going there to play poker and he traveled from another state and showed up unexpectedly at my hotel. He was very creepy and it was totally uncomfortable for me. I had to be tricky to get rid of him.

But with that said I have met LOADS of CC members and that is literally the only bad experience I have ever had doing that. And in that case he was not invited and it was not planned in advance.

All other CC members have been as amazing in person as they are in the forum! :)

OMG Debi, you have had some bad experiences, so sorry, I think it is part of the success you have had as the administrator of one of the best Poker pages that exist :D I'm really sorry to read about your not so good experiences, but I read that you have also had good ones. I would be glad that you never have to go through something like that again, I hope one day to go to Canada and be invited and be able to share with some of you guys. Regards :)

I have never and would never invite a complete stranger to my house for a poker game, or for any other activity.
A few years ago, my wife invited my golf partner and his wife to join us on vacation for a couple weeks. I changed the invite to one week. We did not know them in any other context and all I knew about him was from our weekly golf game.
The vacation week was a disaster. The guy was a very heavy drinker and spent the evenings in their bedroom drinking. His wife was pushy and condescending. We were so glad to see them leave and even happier that we had limited their visit to one week. I cannot imagine what it would have been like if they had stayed for two weeks.
Immediately after they left we went to the local casino to get the bad taste of their visit out of our heads. Actually, it has never left.
Invite a stranger to my poker game - not on your life.

I think if you invite strangers to play at your house, poker will stop being a hobby and your house will become a casino. jajaja

Probably advise against it, you never know what is out there.
