Hi, I was wondering what people do that want to play live, but aren't properly rolled for it, since casinos don't have micro stakes. My bankroll is not my living money, so should I take shots at live to build it to a level that I can use proper management, or should I just stick to micro stakes and take 50 years to build up 10K lol. Am I wrong to say that I should take higher shots at the casino since it isn't the money im living on? My goal isn't mainly to "play poker," it is to build my bankroll. So playing micro stakes for years because im following bankroll rules isn't really accomplishing my goal. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think this has been asked a few times before but if you are just playing as a recreational player then only play what you are comfortable losing. If you dont mind losing the roll in one session then take the whole lot and try and spin it up (obviously I wouldnt advise this) Are you playing cash or MTTs? You might find more low buyin MTTs that might stretch your roll further than playing cash and give you an opportunity for a nice little bankroll boost.

Well my situation is tricky because i'm not playing recreationally, as i'm studying and treating it seriously and trying to build my bankroll. But on the flipside, this isn't money I use to live on. So I don't know if I should follow strict bankroll rules and grow it super slow over a long time, or take a bigger risk (going against the bankroll rules) because it's not the money i live on

if its not the money you live on and you dont mind losing it, like if you can eventually play again if you lose all of it and try again at some point, i would suggest trying to take a shot at those games, if you happen to win big few times you will already be rolled to play in those games and eventually be able to move up, no reason to follow strict br managment unless you never want to go broke with ur poker bankroll and never invest in it again, if you dont mind taking a shot id say go for it :)

ive had the same problems/thoughts when i was starting and ive done tons of like 100$ deposits before eventually getting my roll going and realizing i can make a living doing it, and i always played like 5-10buyins cashgames online and if i went broke i came back next week or after 2 3 weeks when i get money that i dont mind losing again and deposit, and eventually i built up few k from a 100$ deposit and never had to worry about it again since i just won up from there pretty much

Give yourself an affordable budget for it and worry more about that budget than an overall bankroll - especially if you are not playing that often.

This^

You're putting yourself in an impossible situation if you're trying to build a live play roll from online micro stakes. Following good BRM rules, it would take a looong time to create a bankroll big enough to play live AND continue to use good BRM.

So you can do as Debi suggests and not try to BRM your live play like you are building from zero to infinity. Or, you can carefully build a roll to the value of a single live tourney or two and blow it. Or, you can concentrate on trying to micro/freeroll your way to live events "directly". Or, if you are lucky enough to live near a live venue that accepts partypoker Live Dollars, you can try to micro stake your way to a modest (or bigger) live roll and try it out there. By virtue of the fact that PPL$$ have an expiration date, and because live tourneys are usually much more expensive than online micro's, they kind of preclude a tortoise-like approach to building a roll.

I have played live with a budget. I have played play money until I'm the Donald Trump of play money. I have played online micro stakes until I've built up enough of a bankroll to increase stakes. But I have never tried to go from online micro to live event until the introduction of PPL$$ last year.

First of all, you have to decide for yourself.Well, to play at once on the big rates, it does not mean a win,and can be a big loss, the main thing is not to enter into excitement with the head

This...and...

Try to have keep enough to cover a few bad sessions (i aim for 5 sessions - 15 buyins) in reserve. This way i find being able to withstand a 5-10 buyins in a short period (2-5 sessions) keeps me playing the games i think i should be in (e.g. my current 1/2 homegame i have had the following results over the last 5 sessions since i started the newyear. (-1k, +1.34k, +2.28k, -0.68k, +0.88k)) ... so its not uncommon to pump 400 bbs into the game in a session

Play only for the money, the loss of which will not be a disaster for you.

For live, I would say that this is great advice since you aren't trying to make a living from it. Hopefully your casino has a 1/2 or 1/3 game that you can play in. I would not "take a shot" at stakes that are higher than that. If you play micros online, and are close to breakeven, then you would be really surprised at how easy it is to play live. You might get bored with the slower action though. Good luck on the felt.
