Why blocked hand is still better?

A9

A8

I expected A8 to be better in this vs 99 case, but A9 is still slightly ahead, dunno why

When you have the 9 of diamonds in hand it obviously can't be part of the 5 community cards. Apparently, that is slightly more important than the possibility of runner runner eights.

Because if you hold A9, its less likely, there will be a board runout like AQ932, where you improve to top pair but still end up losing to a set. And this is more important than being able to win on a runout like KQ882, which is fairly unlikely anyway. Or in more general terms: Its more important to block the opponents redraw than to have a slightly stronger draw yourself.

Probably a possible diamond flush is the biggest advantage for Ah9d.

Fundiver is absolutely correct here. The reason is the 9 blocks the other players chances for improving. With the 8 you need 2 of them to show up and if your going to win it most likely because and ace shows up.

A9 block set to 99 only by half, but ok whatever.

Because we're cutting the 99 chance of hitting a set in half.
