Why am I more successful with the play money games?
Starting with the 1,000 chip bankroll of play money I have played that into over 5000,000 chips, that is like taking a $10.00 stake and turning it into $5,000.00 if it were real money. I don't deposit money into any accounts that I play at anymore but I do play the free rolls and when I am a winner of some small amount, usually just a few dollars and change I try to play that into a larger bankroll, once I played winnings from a free roll into over $100.00 but I guess I got over confident and ended up losing all of it. Currently I am having moderate success with my small amount that I won in a free roll and have played that to a little over $25.00. The strategy that I first started with seems to work pretty good and that is to quit while you are ahead, no matter if it is a small amount, I found most of the time at some point I am in the black and when that happens, if I quit I am a winner and if I do that every time I play then my bankroll will increase but it really takes self discipline to do that consistently. What are your thoughts on this?

Maybe because you are not afraid to lose them and play more aggressively than in real money games.

My experience seems to mimic yours. I feel there is something a foul happening to players that do not deposit, but not able to prove it. So I just play for the practice on line. Cash games with real people is working just fine for me. If you do not deposit you will not be aloud to withdraw any of your winnings, that I know.

I would like to politely disagree with your comments. first of all, with random number generators, I do not believe anything foul is going on against players who do not deposit. I believe this would offer no incentive to the website because if players constantly lose they are not likely to deposit anyway, and the goal is to get the players to deposit. second of all, your statement about not being able to withdraw unless you deposit is not necessarily true. On global poker there is a withdrawal minimum of $50 but they do not say that you cannot withdraw unless you deposit.

It does not take a genius to achieve something in those play money tournaments/games. It would be naive to think people put the same effort playing play money as playing real money. In fact, play money is good enough to learn the very BASICS, like what is straight or how to re-raise. If you want to advance your knowledge of poker, start playing real-money games. Play money ain't serious.

re: Poker & Why am I more successful with the play money games?
This has happened to me in the past too where I start out playing disciplined and winning and then bleed it away. I suspect it's fatigue leading to recklessness (win lots of small pots and then lose a stack to a monster because I get reckless). Do you think it's a matter of discipline/fatigue for you too? It could also be that losing a pot after having a winning session puts you on tilt without you noticing and you make bad decisions trying to win it back? Best thing to do is not think of money as money but just think of your stack as being fluid and very up/downy. And also realize that if you just keep making quality plays it will get bigger eventually. It's possible you don't care about this with playchips therefore you do well, but that you see money as money and go on tilt when you lose it. In fact, one of the dumbest mindset changes I've had is becoming enamored with the money I won starting from a small bankroll and then starting to think of it as money that can be lost (combined with overconfidence); low and behold my winrate plummeted. I let myself think of my bankroll as money instead of a resource for playing poker and it cost me. I also recommend getting some tracking software to see which spots you are losing money in and work on ironing those leaks out. Maybe you can even compare playchip games to regular money and see if you are losing money in the same spots for the playchip games (just to see if there really is a difference or if it's random chance) Playchip games are much softer than even NL2 so I wouldn't give those results too much merit. They are good practice for multitabling (when you want to practice adding more tables) and endurance though.

Hi mate.Fortunately.I almost didn´t play those play money games..I´d rather played freerolls and when I reached a decent bankroll ,I started playing some sng´s and cash games. The experience is totally different.

I like your naivety, in a good way, but you have to understand that playing for conventional chips and for money is earth and sky, think about it, good luck

When you play with play money you don't care if you will loose or not. This makes players to play much more aggressively than they should. With play money also no bankroll management is needed so this very important aspect of your game is not developed at all. When you win some $ from freerolls having good bankroll management is very important because this will allow you to turn these few $ into more without loosing them. You should work on this.

Unfortunately it's not on your level of the game (although it can be quite high), just people playing on the game pieces are very far from the poker! My advice is not to play the game pieces and it will get a lot of bad habits!

re: Poker & Why am I more successful with the play money games?
Generally the players have low skill levels in play money games. They often open jam preflop with any hand they are going to play because they don't know how to play post flop and don't really understand the game. You have a much better handle on the game than most of them. So you have success. Don't let it go to your head....but if you can replicate some success in real money games then go ahead and do it! Good luck !

Work it Evan... .work it!! fwiw, I was going to say... because playchip games are a joke. It's not even poker. Also, your thinking (re: leave while ahead strategy) is flawed. There'll be times when you lose immediately. Instead, why not just learn 'how to win'.. then the longer you sit, the better it is for you (fwiw I can relate to the wanting to LEAVE NOW after winning a few pots as a beginner on the cash tables.. this was my strategy on the old DoylesRoom while playing 20nl (10c/20c blinds). They offered a great promo freeroll back then where if you played 10 raked hands, you'd get a ticket to the freeroll. It was easy money in that freeroll.). Without that freeroll this would've never been a winning strategy in the long run... because I wasn't really learning how to play. Just as you won't learn how to play on the playchip tables either... it'd be like a pitbull trying to learn how to win fights by fighting against house mice..... or D.C. Cormier taking on kindergarten kids during recess.

Personally, the same thing has happened to me and I have come to think that if it were real money, my earnings would be enormous. But the answer is simple, after thinking about it, it is not difficult to know that at the play money tables the level of the players is usually a little low, and if not, the decisions are easier for the simple fact of knowing that you don't stake your money. That's what I think. regards

Hi.
Cash games are difficult for me, so I prefer tournaments. But I think cash games can be very profitable. If your strategy is profitable in the long run, then you just need to play, be patient and disciplined. Good luck.

Because nobody cares about losing play money so the game is completely different. I remember when I played my 1st real money sit n go. Even though it was only $5 sit n go and I was still able to get 2nd place the level of competition is completely different. You're not even playing the same game. Well maybe you are playing the same but your opponents are not.

Play money games are not real games , they don't represent the real action at buyin games . Players at play money stakes play for fun , very loose or crazy, worse thatn freerolls . You won't learn good stuff , you will acquire very bad habits . I have tried , used to believe you learn sth , completely wrong I was . A complete waste of time . Only in playmoney homegames like CC league games (I don't think there are similar , are there ??) you can play decent poker games with very good players and learn sth , all other are cr** .

re: Poker & Why am I more successful with the play money games?
Why would you ever go back to play money? Once you have graduated, time to move up to the next grade. Played play chips because I didn't trust online poker back in the day. Once the deposit steps were made, bye bye candy land.
Make the deposit plunge and build a decent BR. Don't see anything you are gaining by playing free rolls to fund poker. Let those help supplement the BR, not finance it.

Freemoney games do not give you random cards, plain and simple.
They give you hole cards that are irresistible to fold 90% of the time. Either high cards or perhaps the same cards the won the previous hand, or even better, cards that would have beat the previous winner. They want you to go all in and lose so you'll buy chips, but first they'll string you along and hope you get addicted.

On the second item, I can only speak to PokerStars. I had 15 dollars and I tried to transfer 1 dollar to another player in PokerStars and it was declined because and I quote "the funds are not available to transfer until a deposit is made to your account". Quoting to the best of my recollection, may not be exact.

Hello!
People playing conditional money have a completely different attitude to the game. There is no fear of losing money, a great desire to take risks, because there is nothing at stake!)

In play money games, players play worse than real money games. Moreover, many of the players you will find there, have not played for real money at all and they are very easy opponents. So you get a great advantage if you are a player who has a normal playing career.
