You should never deposit before you try the game. Use freerolls as a way to gain experience, get a feeling for the game and possibly build your roll a bit. If you are able to earn some money through freerolls then you're ready to start your poker career at micros ;)

This. Nothing is going to beat experience and there are plenty of free play options out there.

IMO you should start with reading a book. That's what really got me rolling and successful at poker. I've read about 6-8 books now. I would just go to my local Barnes and Noble and check out the poker books selection and find whatever interested me.
