Good day,
Can you learn to play poker using virtual money and then have good results playing for real money? It seems people act differently when playing for real and for virtual money. So does it make sense to practice with fake money if my goal is to learn to play for real?

If you are unfamiliar with poker then virtual would be a good way to start.
But the play is not the same you would find at real money tables

actually for me it's like putting a penguin in the desert and asking him to learn how to survive in this environment. it is necessary to play games of money to improve his game. It is in forest that one becomes blacksmith. on the other hand to play events like the league of CC is a very good way to learn to play better with fictitious money.

It's extremely difficult if you haven't played for real money before to have good results when moving from play money. It makes sense to practice with play money, just to get used to the rules. But you just have to move to real money if you like the game.

People often say there are different skillsets needed to win at different stakes of cash games. I have to think that applies but 1000x more moving from virtual to real.

An example: In virtual, if you want to learn if someone is bluffing.... why not just call? It doesn't really cost you anything. But, in cash, if calling is money out of pocket.

nothing similar about the 2 game formats i used to kill it at the play money tables but the game is just completely different at real money tables i dont know what it is you just dont get half as many showdown hands as you do at play money tables.... i think a fair thing to say is if your doing well at play money tables your skill set there might apply to low end money tournaments as i truly believe they are similar.. you get as in you get alot of donks that dont care and will shove with anything... hope this helps..

Virual poker is good to learn the very basics like remembering which hands beat other hands, what a big blind is, that a flush means 5 cards of the same suit. But you dont wat to learn any actual strategies or gameplay with virtual poker. instead play freerolls. it still wont be the best play but 100x better than virtual because many people actually try and if you get deep into the tournament then it will be much better play. But to answer the question No, you cant learn to play at virtual and use those skills to beat real money.

Thanks for posting.

Many of the posters are correct here about game play. The key difference in virtual poker is there is no fear of loss so we cannot win chips by getting villains to fold very often.

We can however work on some skills in the virtual world and then transfer those skill to the real cash games to help us win more.

When starting few new players attempt enough bluffs because of fear of failure.
Playing in the virtual games allows you to become comfortable with bluffing in correct spots more often.

The key is your bluffs will not win in the virtual games, you will be called. This seems counter intuitive. In virtual you should not be focusing on win loss as it is just a lottery. You should instead be playing hands losing pots when you correctly bluff then reviewing those hands to be sure your bluff was correct.

What do I mean. So you read a player for having a weak hand. You then set up a three barrel bluff representing a better hand. Then the villain calls you with nothing and wins. You stop review the hand and go through each street and see if you made a mistake or not. Was your read correct? Was your bluffing story valid? Could you have the hands you were representing? Were your bet sizes the bet sizes you would use if you had those hands?

When bluffing we want to represent several hands we could be holding not just one.
ie 233 we bluff only the 3 or 22 or over pair. 234 we can have. 22 33 44 A5 56 over pair Ax bluff the turn when a 5 comes etc etc etc.
There are many more spots to consider.

You can work at getting very good at reading hand strengths and choosing bluff spots in virtual and that very much helps you to win in real games.
Just expect to be called but the chips are free so why not lose them learning to bluff.

Hope this helps

Practicing with play money is a good way to learn the game and what is sound strategy to use when you play for real money. Just remember while other people may not be taking a play money game seriously that you should be because thats the only way to get better so you can use what you learn at real money tables.

I think it's better to play freerolls, but for real money.

These questions always miss a key information, tournaments or cash games? If cash then Virtual money can help. If tournaments not really

You play with virtual money to get to know the rules and nuances of the game. When you have the rules down pat then its time to test it out with real money.

Sounds sensible. I usually play for virtual money and I am better and better in this. then when I go to the real money game, it seems like I didn't do any progress... :(

like you don't appreciate if something is for free when you have to pay for it, you think twice before you spend your money. Make sense...

Sounds like real money needs more skills, virtual money needs more good luck...

I think with virtual money you can learn the basics of poker and the general game over going, but the strategy and the poker mind come only with real money games

To play for virtual money can be in the beginning, just to memorize the cards, game rules and learn poker. But in order to win money, you need to learn to play for money.

I think it is possible to learn how to play poker for virtual money, but only at high limits. According to my observations, the game of poker for play money at high limits is not inferior to real money at micro-limits.

I believe that virtual money is intended only to get acquainted with the basics of the game. In my opinion, it is better to play real money, even if it is freerolls.

These are two completely different games. But if you are a novice player, then you should start training to play for virtual money. And when you realize that you play well, go for real money.
