Why does this bother me so much?
playing when it comes to making the pot bigger so I can reach a final table comes the variance and I always fall out of the tournament
Am I playing wrong or is it just the variance?

This all depends on how you are playing. Some hands in some situations it’s good to build a big pot and some hands you will want to keep the pot small. Variance will always always be part of the game and you are just going to have to deal with it as a poker player. Look into all your situations and try to find what you are doing wrong.
