Hey all,

I just joined CC (finally) and I wanted to know the most effective way to get good at poker (surprise).


I've played mostly SNG's and some cash games. Don't have a great ROI which has helped me remember the importance of developing skills in low stakes. I find myself often getting 4th place in the SNG's Turbo or Hyper-Turbo and sometimes getting 1st and 2nd.


That being said, in your experience, what are the 3 most effective & efficient ways to become a better Poker Player? Play 500,000 hands? Read a particular book?

do not bluff
know your opponents
and play with position

3 ways to be a better poker player, in my opinion, would be to study poker outside of actual playing..such as calculating expected profits, hand equities, pot/implied odds calculations...

#2 I would recommend you read poker books, listen to poker audiobooks (SENSEI JOHNATHAN LITTLE!), and watch youtube videos of pros going over hands

Lastly, try playing other forms of poker...7 card stud is really fun and helps you understand by highlighting some aspects of poker and game structure that texas holdem might gloss over

1. Constantly analyze your hands. It is necessary to analyze both winning and losing hands.
2. Good selection of hands for the game. It is also worth considering the number of rivals and their style of play, the size of the stack.
3. Bankroll management. Ability to manage a bankroll is necessary for a comfortable game.

Do not go all in or pay the bet if the vilain chips will hurt your stack or ur tournament life.

4th place with first 3 places paid is PITA!
It depends on how large stack you have when the table is reduced to 4 players.
If you are a chip leader it is the easier task, but sometimes you should still stay aside of some hands as the rest of the players are also fighting for their lives
If you are somewhere to average stack, I can tell you in most cases it is better to wait the bubble guy dropped out and chase your luck afterwards - at least you will not left the STT empty handed
If you are the one with lowest stack - turn on the short stack mode (sometimes ultra short stack, yeah), and try to get your ass beyond the bubble, and why not - to win it in the end

Hey. You should read the following books:
1) Sit n Go Strategy by Collin Moshman
2) Crushing Online Sit and Gos by Greg Jones
3) Heads-Up No-Limit Hold 'em Expert Advice for Winning Heads-Up Poker Matches by Collin Moshman
4) Secrets of non-Standard Sit n gos

• You must have a bankroll... When you do not even think about losing (50bi - 100bi +)
• You have to play more than 1000 tournaments a month.
• You must develop your post-flop play skills and observe your opponents style of game.
• You don't need to open 24 tables and do automatic actions.
• Find one friend with whom you could talk. Playing alone is very sad.

Thx for the books reference. Gonna search for them.

In my opinion you must do 3 things:
1-breath poker
2-eat poker
3-live poker


hehehe this my sound cliche but it is true you have to study the game, the math and your hands share them in forums like this with people who has more experience discuss of hand is really good for learning as beginner I recomend to you this:


1- focus in one type of game and own it, have you heard ''student of everything master of nothing'' if is SNG then study SNG.


2-Always think in ranges, you should always play by logic and analysing your rival and the situation never for a hunch.


3- never stay with one gamestyle you must change your game always depending on the things like: Stack size, position, stage of a tournament, etc


well and that's all is easy to say or write heheh but really hard to do.
