What do you think is the best way to reduce variance in the game of poker?
To plays fewer tables at a time is a good start
Not to play Fast Tables (Zoom) helps a lot.
As much more we play, and we are not solid professionals, at least most of us who are striving here in the forum, more the variance, bigger the frustration and other bad feelings.
To try to control luck is hard but we can minimize its effects on a short term rational game. Pot control is one of the little things we can really control while playing:
Henceforth, if you decided to go for many exploits moves and begins to open raise 4 BB, 5 BB preflop, you are increasing variance for your own willingness.
A long time ago I have stopped posting here because a mate posted a hand where he was playing NLHE 100 and elected to open raise 9 or 10 BB preflop, and he was not the last to speak, he wasn’t holding AA or AK, and his logic for doing so was this: there was a fish on the table. But fishes also hit their equities don’t they?
As much more blinds we put on the pot for our own will, more the chances that we are going to stack on earlier streets, because of the SPR, we get committed to the pot soon and many times we are going to regret.
Summarizing, try to let the pot small most of times because we cannot control luck or the dealer. Thus we can control variance.
If you are not a poker Grand Master or a very experienced player, why would you open a lot of tables? In 6-MAX Cash Tables 1 out of 3 times we are paying the blinds, so if you open 9 tables at once, can you calculate how much big it would be the variance in a bad running session?
Sometimes we gotta be aggressive, sometimes we gotta be passive. Most of all, we have to be smart and trust only our instincts while playing, never to trust our logic conscious minds.
And your instincts will tell you almost 99% of times that you shouldn’t have called this or that, you shouldn’t have bet here or there!
Remember, we bet only for value or for bluff, not for information, not because we are angry or tired and never because our opponent is a known whale, these aren’t reasons for burning chips into the pot.
