You really can not get better playing play money games so play for the fun of it or don't play.

We do have some games that would be good to play in here:

Cardschat Fall Frenzy!

Poker professional Jason Somerville has created a Home Game Club on PokerStars for fans of his Run It Up videos. You could do worse than join the club and play some of the tournaments or cash games, many of which are play money. You may even get to play against Jason himself :)

Club Id 950160
Invitation Code Warriors

More Info on his twitter https://twitter.com/JasonSomerville

IMO, these are the two best suggestions to take to heart. As already stated, most play money games won't teach you good poker strategies, but they will better acquaint you with the basics, betting, etc.

The Fall Frenzy Series is a wonderful, no-risk opportunity to shape up your game, while learning and practicing many of the different poker variants, while also rubbing elbows with some of CC's finest. Even though these are freerolls, be assured that we take them very seriously.

I'm not acquainted with Jason Somerville, but anything that Rich recommends, I would look into. Rich is an excellent player.

Good luck to you on your endeavors.

i played play money games on fb zynga for about 6months..never played the game before that, but sitting down every night for sometimes 4 hours playing with my fb mates at the same table..had a good time tbh...learned hand rankings and how the button and blinds worked etc...then started to put people on hands based on betting actions and board texture and though 'omg i can hand read lol'..tbf i got quite alot right and i was known by my 'zynga' poker playing buddies as 'good at it'...

so i looked around for a real money poker site and picked pokerstars and tried to learn the fundementals of the game...<still trying...but if it wasnt for fb and zynga i wouldnt have thought about playing poker.

There were alo of pokersites that offer NDB upon sign-up.

Simply choose one and you can start playing with real money also

plus the freeroll. Its much better option to practice than playmoney.

In my opinion playing poker with "play" money is no better than playing Bingo if there is no posssibility of true loss there is no reason not to push with any 2 cards I call play money games PNP Push and Pray

i found 99% of play chip games to be total nonsense although i was only playing on the lowest of limits so i couldn't comment on how the play chip games play with huge tourney buy ins or huge play chip ring game buy ins but the 1% i have enjoyed playing is the heads up zoom play chip game 5/10 blinds on pokerstars..... you still get the donkeys who shove all the time(me included if im bored) but there are also players that are there to play properly which i find is really usefull for improving you HU game for times when you may be HU in an mtt or SNG or even HU cash games.

You can practice only with a real money .. Because play money you will call when you have pair or nothing ,this is wrong for practice..

play money

Play money is a 2 edge sword it will help you to understand the game of your new to it and will help you gain experience by trying allot of hands to see what works and what doesn't. However when your in real money situations the play is totally different and the mentality is as well. As long as ypou keep this in mind and take a play money not seriously you'll be fine I also think free rolls would be your best bet

if you're brand new to a particular game like plo, plo hi/lo, razz, etc and want to improve, i think play money is great practice. for nlhe, i don't think it'll improve your game at all. just keep in mind that all hands played in play money shouldn't be overanalyzed because players will usually be a lot looser.

good thread.... i was just considering this myself...

about 4 weks ago my bankroll ran out, so in the meantime (we're broke, so can't afford my biweekly weekend deposit) i played 4 weeks of play money zoom....

i agree that it is a different game... players play/call with crap hands and will shove all-in at the drop of the hat....

i found that if you play a good game it is not hard to increse your play money balance quite easily.... i also find that it is a good way to get ahold of the variance concept... even if you're still playing well, you will still lose koney at times, but with patience you will see that you should eventually make money... i would play real money zoom and as soon as i started losing i would panic and get stressed and tilt....

i also think it is a good place to play a lot of hands and try various strategies, like check-raise, squeeze play, slowplay, all-ins, 3betting, etc.... it also will help your board reading a bit.... trying to put an opponent on a hand may be difficult as they will play anything.... you will still make mistakes and then learn from them to apply to real money...

and while playing the playmoney, read as much as you can... i've read almost 2 books in the past 4 weeks..

again, this applies to someone who is pretty new and wants to play a lot of hands to get comforatbl.... i only statred last May and probably jumped to the real money without proper study....

so, take this with a grain of salt as, i am still a newbie and pretty fishy at times..

Play money is good to learn how to NOT play poker . You have many, many freerolls where you can get cash . Its hard , but you can do that if you wanna. A big big difference is between play money and real cash games. :albertein

i think play money will teach you patience and starting hand requirement that is needed to win for real money . you can also see how different hands are not that much in bad shape preflop ie a7-10-9

Practice with play money makes no sense, as there is no specific purpose , you have nothing to lose . The beginner must know the rules and combinations and then move on to the tournaments with a small buy-in or play in freerolls . A good player is practiced in any game and analyze every hand

With play money can learn the rules. I think that there is no serious games. Same with micro tournaments.

I don't have a lot of experience in online games, but I could fastly see a few diferences between tables with real and play money.

1. There are few skilled players in play money tables. They play a too loose style, sometimes even irresponsible.

2. Players in play money tables are more inconsequent. They go all-in in their very first hand with 3-9.

3. Players in real money table put pressure more smartly and consistently on you. Two mistakes and you will be done. That's why you need to play more tight in real tables.

4. Mental issues might bring you trouble in real tables more often than in play money tables. Having a strong, confidente mind is important.

From what I can remember about play money, very few people actually 'play' poker in those games. I've seen people refer to it as bingo, and that's probably a pretty good description (lots of fish). If you are just beginning with poker, you might pick up a few things playing with play money (maybe) but, imho, I wouldn't waste too much time with it.

Yes, playing free money can improve your game. It helps you to understand games, logic and strategies. It is not bad to play for free money.

play money use to be ok when fulltilt had those 500k playchip tourneys where you could win cash so they where a good idea to starting a bankroll and not having the huge freeroll fields but since there swap over and no longer having them I don't see the point in using them as no one takes them serious
