In the game of poker, which is played in "live" and "online" mode, we need to look for indicators that allow us to make a possible reading of the opponent's hand.
For live poker, some varieties of "tells" must be observed to try to read an opponent, such as the posture at the table, how they are holding their cards, and their anxiety level.
In online poker, this information is not available. The "response time" or how long it takes a player to act once it is their turn is one of the few tools we have to read the opponent.
The basic principle is that the longer it takes a player to make a move, the stronger his hand is. For this reason, the opponent needs to stop and think about the best way to extract chips.

However, as in everything in poker, this "tell" cannot be considered a guarantee that the villain has a strong hand because many players use this concept to give false information about their hand.

Think about it.

In online poker, you can read an opponent, because of the sizes of their bets, against the good players it is more difficult, because they know when to make small, medium or large bets.

online you can distinguish a regular from a beginner
beginners generally do not comply with bet sizes behave inappropriately with their stack
although in order to determine this you need to watch the players for some time

for me the best read is betting size and aggression. It's not 100% solid, but most of the time it gets u the right feeling.
for example: in microlimits if you are reraised on turn or river, your overpair is never good etc.

I don't understand how you define a hand by response time. There are people who make a bet per second. For example, I use time to calculate the necessary outs to win. When I go to the kitchen for tea, the response time increases. Your opponent can play at multiple tables and take their time.

Hi Berandir, nice post!

Regarding online tells here are a few that I like
-timing tells (as you mentioned) but it depends on how many tables they are playing
-how many tables they are playing (and what limits) says a lot about then
-screen name tells (for more on this check the video below)
-player stats (for this i use something like sharkscope.com)
-pokertracker stats (at first we don't have much but after 100s of hands we learn a lot about someone)

Hope you enjoy my points!
Good luck n happy stackin!

In live poker, tells can be posture, gestures, if your carotid trembles, and much more. online you can only know if someone is inattentive when they leave the autocheck, or the autofold and we can interpret that it is a recreational, also when they do a lot of limp of the BB, you realize that it is a recreational or fish, but much more you can not know, regards:cool:

more recreational players can be found online by the outcome of the showdown when the game is a very wide range and still out of position
they like to watch the flop with any two[emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

I play alot at Bovada where it's completely anonymous so the only tells you get are the ones you get from that short amount of time you play with each player. For example I could get tells from their actions that Player #243 in a tournament is really aggressive.

+1 bet sizings it's very important tell especially in microlimit. In certain spots, it is very easy to realize that if you had a very strong hand, they would bet on another sizing.

Online game is much different from the real one. At the real one I think you have to play a different strategy. You can read a player after mimic after face while the online one cannot.

Personally, I mainly play online. I play poker live occasionally with friends, but more for fun's sake and not for money.

In live games, since my friends are not regulars, I could easily tell if they like what they see or not of course, against this kind of players it is obvious. Against more professional players in the casino, I'm sure you need to go more deep as to look for micromimics, see what uncontious moves they do with their hands, do they stop shuffling the chips in a certain spots etc. I reckon this kind of reading opponents must be very interesting!

On the other side, for online poker you have several opportunities for reading people, although it is totally different:

-time players need for their decision. Sometimes taking more times means they are in a tough spot. Some players however, have learned to always use up the same amount of time for their decision, regardless if they have the nuts or air.

- bet size. Here relation to the stack size is crucial, position and playing behavior in previous hands.

In general, the more hands you play against a certain opponent, the more you get to know his behavior and opening /calling /raising range. That's why I usually take notes why playing with opponents.

I agree, these are two different things with different strategies. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
