When you sit down at an online game, take your time, there is absolutely no need to rush in. If you can wait for the big blind, do so. Sit out a good few hands to see how the other players are playing. There is a mine of information when the show down comes to find the players' starting hands. Take notes if you need to, it can be difficult to keep track of s full table.

I'm the same always waiting for the big blind. However, it is difficult to play online and not be distracted by the chat, a movie, or a girl to gather information about the opponents

I also just observe table before sitting. Gives more time to see if it's suitable table or not...
