I am new to this community, and I have come here with the intention of sharing experiences (in my case they are bad) and learning from their advice beyond any course that can be carried out.
There are situations that I cannot control (and I cannot avoid them), among other things I would like to know if in these (unavoidable) situations I am the culprit?
example: What should I do in situations like the following? : first hand of a tournament, I on the button with K So I must call the all in of UTG1 who has 8 2 and ends up beating me with a pair of 8.
And so an endless number of similar situations in which these "irresponsible" end winning hands in a ridiculous way.
Thank you in advance for your opinions,

Welcome to cardschat. My advice would be expecially very early in tournaments, if you think you are ahead of the range of your opponent... that does not mean you have to call. In the instance you provided you are facing an all in with AK. Know that with a non made hand such as AK you will either have to hit one of your cards to win vs a pair by the opponent or not have the villain hit one of their cards if they do not have a pair. In this specific case you are roughly 70% favorite (giving you AK spades and opponent 82 off with no spades). You are way ahead yes but you will also lose and be out 30% of the time. It is up to you whether you want to take the risk to double up. Over time you clearly should be making a call if this is the hand your opponent has but sometimes they will show up with 88 or better pairs. Against 88 you are in the 47% range of winning. So maybe against all hands that would shove you are somewhere in the 65% range (that is just a guess) meaning you will lose 1/3rd of the time. Still odds are in your favor to double up but just know losing 1/3rd of the time is normal in these spots and will happen. That is why some fold in these spots unless they have a big made hand.

You are not responsible for kx being beaten by k2, it will happen a certain percentage of the time. That being said, there is no law you should always call with kx on the button. If they player who went all in under the gun was tight you probably shouldnt. If you didnt know them yet, maybe not also.

Who said you had to or "must call the all in of UTG1." You could've folded. Now, you say you were on a button with a K but you didn't mention what the other card was. Was it KK? KA? KQ.....etc? Him just going all-in should have gave you the notion he possibly had something better like AA or maybe he had the same cards as you but suited? either way, I would have laid this one down. Sometimes you have to fold a good hand so you can live to fight another day or in this case, save your chips for another hand....in any case I've ran into players who go all in on crappy hands and my only reasoning for them is they either can't play any more and they're looking to go out with a bang or...…..they're looking to intimidate players and make some quick pots....I would stay clear of these types of players. You may even want to write his/her name down incase you run in to him/her at another table. Two rules of thumb that may help. Number 1 is...…..Be the first to go all-in. Number 2 is...…...Don't go all-in without a strong hand with an Ace...AA, AK, AQ....etc. and I try not to go all in pre-flop with anything other than AA. It's the Aces pre-flop and that's it. Anything else is all-in post-flop. Good Luck!

As others have said, you are only sharing one of your cards, but since he won with a pair, you presumably did not have KK. Maybe you had AK, but even then you dont “have” to call all-in preflop in the first blind few blind levels of a normal tournament.

In tournaments like the 1$ 45 man SnG on Stars you will sometimes see an early position player go for a ridiculous open jam for 30-75BB in the first 2-3 blind levels. In my experience most of the time these players will show up with a hand like 55-88 or maybe AK. Hands that are strong but difficult to play out of position, when they miss the flop. So instead they just ship it in.

And against that kind of range there is really no point in calling with AK, since you are never getting it in with an edge. You are either looking to split the pot or to flip as a slight underdog, and you are not getting a good price at all. So just fold and live to fight another day.

In this case the opponent had 82, which makes me think, it was probably a freeroll. Typically people dont play this bad, when their own money is at stake, unless they are 12 beers in or something. If its a freeroll, then I like calling with AK, and there is no reason to get mad or upset, because he won. You got it in good, and then come what may. Its out of your control, so why even worry about it. You have already won the battle, when he flips over 82.

Also understand, that AK is not that far ahead of anything, so losing with AK is normal and expected. 82 has two free cards, so depending on the suits he probably had around 35% equity. Are you also infuriated, if you play a game with a dice, and your opponent hits a 5 or 6? That would be silly right?

What you are suffering from is called entitlement. You feel, that when your opponent played bad, you deserve to win. But this is not, how poker works. Its all math and percentages. Learn to leave your emotions and especially your ego outside the (virtual) poker room, and you have taken the first important step towards becoming a winning player. Or even just enjoying the game :)

Hi Zarate,

Something I've taken from podcasts with poker pros is that the frustration is reduced once you have knowledge that you made the 'right play'.

I asked two pros a question along these lines and both their answers were fascinating:

https://www.cardschat.com/forum/tournament-poker-59/dara-okearney-satellite-specialist-ask-me-425223/index6.html
https://www.cardschat.com/forum/learning-poker-57/ask-evan-jarvis-anything-about-learning-432679/index7.html

On your specific example, I would reiterate what others have said that K(?) is just king high against his 8 high. It happens.

However, something you may be interested in reading about is ICM and the value of your chips in a tournament. Going all-in on the first hand does not double the value of your stack, so you could have folded and lived to fight another day :)

poker is about applying math, deducing situations, observations of players and live table cards as well and making a reasonable decision

I bubble frequently. So many times I do not get frustrated losing with AK to a junk hand because it has saved me almost 3 hours of my time by knocking me out early.

Thank you in advance for your opinions,

Hello Zarate, and welcome to Cardschat.

Firstly, you do not have to call the UTG1 with a K. The only time I would consider calling an all in first hand of a tournament is with AKs or better unless of course, I know that the villian has a history of shoving the first hand of a tournament with junk like 82o.

Something that took me a long time to learn and even longer to come to terms with is that no hand is unbeatable. Even AA against A8o will lose 7-8% of the time and actually against 82o you will lose more often (around 13%) because the villain has two live cards to hit. When you have AKs your odds of winning drop to less than 70%, meaning that if you got it all in 10 times in a row with AKs vs 82o you are supposed to lose three times. But that also means that you will win seven times.

What you need to think about is what is the correct decision in the long term. Say we run this scenario and every time you win you get $100 and every time you lose you lose $100. Over 10 hands you will show a profit of $400, so we know that it is a profitable play, regardless of the times you lose.

Do not let the times that you lose frustrate you. Be happy that you are playing against idiots that are prepared to put their entire stack at risk with junk.

Find a good preflop chart, start understanding what hands to play in what positions. You say K on the button...If you had K8 on the button you win that hand (even though K8 off is a loose range, K8 suited is very much in range). Early in tourneys with K8s from that position, play a 3 bet and dump em to a shove...too early to commit all of your chips on a hand like that imo.

The only things you are in control of is how you play and what angers you. You may not think you are but you absolutely are.

Every time you take a bad beat say "I am in control of what angers me". Take this outside of your game and apply it to life.

If you do this every time you get angry you will stabilize your emotions faster. It may take months, maybe a year, but if you stick with it, you will get ahead of it and become less reactive. You will fail at times, but you never truly fail until you stop trying.

This game will not be of benefit to you if you remain in a reactive state, but if you can over come this and improve your game, poker may just turn out to be the most beneficial thing you've ever done.
