I find that I have a hard time taking a day off or not playing when I know I’m tired or mentally not in the game. I feel that I should grind it out no matter what. Predictably, this leads to bad play, spewing off chips, tilt and throwing away money. I need to find a way to convince myself that taking time off when needed is +EV in the long run. Any advice or thoughts?

See the game as on long session. It is almost easier to maximize the winnings and minimize the losses if you don't look at it short term.

And as you know yourself the more you play the A-game the more you win, even if you play fewer hours.

If you're not a professional player that has to play almost every day just to earn a living it is also good for the motivation in the long run to take breaks when your not feeling on top.

If you still want to do something related to poker on the days you don't feel good, use the time to study the game. Analyze hands. Play a lower stake or format to learn new moves/strategy.
