Doubling up the size of your chip stack is always nice for position in a tournament, but I don't know if it is ever really necessary.
The closest I can think of is if you are extremely low on chips (like 4 Big Blinds or less), so that the pot
odds justify you going All-In for your remaining stack on any two cards. Even here, we still may fold if on the stone bubble, or just before an important pay jump. Otherwise, might as well stick it All-In and if you double up, then great!
