Hi,

Just wanted to ask if its good to get a poker coach at early stages on poker or its better to first try and learn the game by yourself. This is a general question for beginners.

Thanks for your replies.

Good poker coaching is definitely worth it at any phase of your play, but especially for beginners. No different than starting out playing golf, tennis, swimming, etc. if you want to get to the point of enjoyment.

I've never had a poker coach, but like hobojim1247 says, it is probably still helpful regardless of your current poker ability. In some ways, it might even benefit you more earlier on your poker journey because you won't have a chance to develop bad habits a poker coach would have to help you "un-learn."

We can't answer this in a void though; the elephant in the room is probably money because we all know that usually coaching of any kind isn't free. It might be best to learn all the fundamentals you can first and then check out a poker coach when you want them to build off of where you left off.

The free 30 Day course on cardschat is a great start :)

Why would you pay someone to look over a beginner's awful hands that has no idea what they're doing when they could spend $10 on an old 20+ year poker book for the same info a coach would tell you, like to play decent cards and learn about position.

Coaching is for people that have a clue what they're doing and have the "basics" down and looking for holes to improve their game. If you use something like PokerTracker or some other way to track your results then you should know how to look for a lot of beginner mistakes anyway.

Beginners and intermediates players don't need a coach. They need to learn the games so they know what mistakes to look for THEMSELVES and a way to track their results so they know if and when they're making those mistakes.

I believe it`s more than enough info you could take from streams on twitch, so much moves and small standard situations are done there.

Thank you for posting.

It depends on what you mean by learn on your own. There is a lot of free material on all forms of poker that can help you learn to play a solid basic strategy. If you learn to just do what they say to do you will be well ahead of just doing it yourself.

Example.

Cash game 150bb deep UTG raises you are EP you have As2s what do you do? Many new players would call but a good player folds. Do you want to spend time losing hands in this spot to finally learn that it is 100% fold.

If you have a lot of money pay for a coach---if not find a training site pay for that---if you do not have even that much money use the cardschat 30day course then get free GTO charts--- pick one form of poker MTT SNG CASH ---Full ring cash only---- watch videos read articles on preflop strategy get a free hud to review your hands etc.

Hope this helps
