Quite a difficult question. Such a bet can be a bluff (in rare cases), and maybe a suggestion of bluffing, like you want the rival to fold, but in fact you are sitting with the nuts

Over betting the pot

When over betting the pot you have to ask yourself a few questions.
First, are you over betting to bluff? Are you betting big to try to push them off the hand? If so, you need to have a very good read on the player. Some aspects of this are,

• Does this play fold when other people have been aggressive? If he calls aggressive bets, then you probably should avoid making one.
• Have you seen this player play a good hand and, if so, is he playing that way now? He may already have a hand he wants you to over bet with
• How big would the bet be compared to your stack size? If you have a 10K stack and the pot is already at 2.5K, an over bet would put you in a very dangerous situation

Second, are you over betting because you have the good hand already? If you already have the good hand you should probably consider sticking with a typical bet which would be more likely to get a call. If you want a call then scaring them off won't do you any good.

Third, you should over bet if you believe you have the opponent beaten at the moment, but are worried they may catch up and beat you by the river. Things like potential flush draws, or straight draws which could hit if you let him stick around. In these cases (you have the better hand AND he may suckout on you) then yeah, definitely throw out an over bet.

You can overbet to bluff when you think the villain has a marginal hand and you have represented to be the nut hand.

You can also overbet for value if you think the villain won't fold no matter the bet size.

I often enjoy the overbet it can be used for several reasons.
1. You get the most value from your strong hands when they call.
2. You maximize fold equity.
3. It puts your opponent in a very difficult spot(they are not used it, the math causes them problems, etc.)
4. Fish dont pay attention to bet sizing.

You want to remember to use it in different ways ie you dont always want to use it as a bluff and you dont always want to use it as a value pone etc.

An overbet can be useful as a bluff or as a value bet. However, I would only consider making an overbet if your perceived range is very, very polarized.

You can overbet prior to the river on wet/dynamic boards with big draws and made hands. For example, you could overbet the turn on a board such as 56J T ssc c with a hand such as 55 or 66, or a hand such as KQss/KQcc or 98ss/98cc.


The purpose of the overbet is to maximize value and protection on such boards when you have value hands and to put maximum pressure on opponents range when you have the bluff hands.
