Hello All,
I'm new to online poker. Had to keep to the legal side for professional reasons, could not risk DOJ action. Live in NJ - now online legal at ~ 4 online sites. I need more education, badly!
Thinking about signing up with Deuces Cracked. Took free 7 day trial, but their content seems very old. I'm not certain that I should be paying to watch 5 year old videos where some chats as he 6 tables. Can anyone advise me. Should I join Deuces Cracked for $29/month and hope that I find more up-to-date content? OR? Do you have any other site where I can learn to play online from real, successful players. I would like to get to the Reg status.
Thanks All.
Mavis

Youtube > Gripsed . He has 290 videos and uploads 4-5 new a week. There are lots of cash game videos and tourney reviews. Some SNG vids aswell. And its 100% free. I think it would be better for you than to pay 29$ a month.

That is just one playing style, through some affiliates you can get free monthly memberships, like raketherake offers free dragthebar memberships with so much rake a month.

Free content is great and all, but this will in no way compare to the variety and quality of content you'll get from a paid coaching site.

The thing to look for is content that's appropriate to your level and a little higher. How people play at levels well above you is less relevant - some might say far less. Also keep in mind that while poker has changed, it has done so more as you look at higher levels. At the entry levels, you can still win just by not making as many poor and mediocre decisions as most of your opponents.

Gripsed is great. I've had membership at poker vt before dvds it was pretty cool. I don't think it is the most up to date coaching sure now tho but def good for learning still. The viewing site you choose should be based on the content you're looking for.

Just to expand on the quality part of this, one thing you can get from at least some paid membership sites is the ability to ask questions and interact with the coaches that produce the videos. Normally this sort of personal interaction requires paying some pretty high coaching fees.

I gave in, paid DC monthly fee. After searching through their video library, choosing only 2 tabling videos, I found that there are some coaches who I can understand and even learn from. So, I had to learn how to learn from the Deuces Cracked site.

I don't think this could ever be a bad investment if you take the time to watch and process the material to try and get better.

As someone who also makes videos on YouTube I can def recommend Gripsed as well, and there are at least 3 players that make 3-7 videos a week on YouTube as a place to start (including myself). That being said, Deuces Cracked is a great site with a great variety of games and styles of play (I subscribe to them as well). I think you will have just as much luck (or more) talking to the YouTube poker commentators as you will with a paid site. I do a leak-finder series of videos that people submit and I review them anytime I can. There is a lot out there, but if you want to beat 5NL 10NL 25NL, you can get there with some hard work and free content for sure.

And while I am not a professional poker player, I do make money playing, the other two commentators on YouTube are pro players.

A lot of the decision making when thinking about what site to join should be less about the price, and more about finding quality content.

The reason why the price is a bit overrated as a factor is because it takes many hours to properly watch good videos, take notes, rewatch parts, digest, etc.

If you end up spending 25 hours in a month watching a $29.99 membership vs 25 hours watching a free site and you value your time at $10hr, you've spent $250 versus $279.99.

At the end of the day, that's a very small difference.

Of course, if you're looking at video guides that cost $500, price will matter more, but I would consider anything $100 and less to be a lot closer in terms of total cost (time + acquisition) than most people make it out to be.

Really try to find good material from the last 2 years, by players that are good at explaining why they are making each decision and have a track record of winning in the games they are teaching in recent years.

I don't play cash games, but DC and Gripsed are pretty reputable places to look at.

I agree with what has been said about taking advantage of all the free material you can find. This is coming from someone who is not yet a winning player at 2NL though :) so take it with a grain of salt. Gripsed videos on youtube are excellent and he also offers free 1 on 1 coaching which is unheard of.

I too like Gripsed on YouTube. Sometimes his little ticks and sniffs become irritating but, if you can get past them, the content is good.

There is also some good stuff here on CardsChat in the Strategy Articles section.

I also quite like thepokerbank.com where they have two sets of videos from guys with different styles as well as lots of articles.

I am not sure what the situation is for USians but pokerstars has it's pokerschoolonline.com which has lots of excellent videos and articles (same on FullTilt but can't remember the name of their training site :) ). As I say, I don't know if they allow USians but if they do, very useful.
