Cash or SnG to build my bankroll?

So I've managed to build a bankroll of just over $40 from playing freerolls and microstakes tournaments over the past 2 months and I'm wondering where to go from here as I don't have time to play freerolls for 6+ hours a day with my new semester in grad school beginning.

If I play 2NL I could either buy in for $2 and have 20 buy ins or buy in the the minimum of $0.80 and have 50 buy ins.

Alternatively I could play the lowest stakes SnGs on which are 1.50 + 0.12 so I'd have about 25 buy ins.

I think I certainly prefer tournament formats but I'm concerned that it might be too easy to run into a big-ish downswing and burn through my bankroll. Thought maybe that's just as likely with cash games? I'm certainly going to be playing freerolls over the weekend when I have more time so maybe that will help smooth out the variance some?

I'd appreciate some advice

Thank U 4 Posting

Several factors to consider.

1 Skill level at each format- you lean towards tournie skills-if you need to retrain for cash u have to add that time in to each day.

2 Time of day u can play-cash games are best at certain times of day and days of the week

3 Variance is lower in cash at 100bb poker only if you are skilled at 3 streets of play. River decisions are far more common in cash and for the largest parts of your stack.

4 Cash games- Villains will play with you and get to know you- so you need to take notes and be more aware of your image.

5 The benefit of 4 is you can use your notes to be in the best cash games versus the weakest players and avoid the better players.

6 Cash games- you are not forced to play marginal hands because you are short stacked. So if you are tight but can fold post flop cash is good.

Hope this helps
:):)

I know many would say cash it the best way to go to build you bankroll at this time. I cant argue that opinion. The thing is what do you enjoy most? While you are not well rolled for SNG the fact that you should cash 1/3 of the time playing those. If you prefer a tournament type game I would stick with what you enjoy. I was in this spot at one time. I played the cash games but did not enjoy them. Went to the SNG and had a blast playing poker again. Good luck mate.

Thanks for the response, this is definitely something I'm going to take into consideration. If I do go ahead and play SnG as my main game, would you say that the speed makes a difference? Wondering if I should steer clear of Hyper-turbo and turbo speeds at first and stick with normal speed or just jump in wherever.

I would recommend SnG, although it is not the same, there is a certain resemblance to the MTT and as advice it uses the usual speed for you I would start with regular but that depends on where you feel more comfortable

glad to be a help here. If you do go the SNG route speed can and does make a difference. I would avoid playing anything faster than turbos and If time allows it play just the normal speed ones as the play will be more about your skill level. I do play a turbo versions at times when there are time restraints. One thing of advise, do look at the structure before you start so you are prepared for the changes in the game and to not be surprised if your stack goes from the I am OK to oh crap I am short.

Hello my friend...
Congratulations on you are building your bankroll gradually through freerolls.
See, you said you don't have much time to play regular tournaments because of your time, I think you could play sit & go from $0.25 to $0.50 with a 45-man field.
This ausus to you have few losses having a solid banking management, and a reasonable profit when you win.
I would particularly play cash game where the variance is much higher, but that's me, really don't like cash game, as I sometimes play Limit Holdem 4/2 and even then have injury, unlike tournaments and Sit & Go.
You're doing well, don't rush to increase your bankroll, and climb to higher limits where you can compromise your money, for me, that's caution and not fear.
I hope I helped you with something, have good luck at the tables and at your graduate school. See you later!
